The camp to date stats are off, because I can't find any from yesterday's afternoon practice.

1st Fall Scrimmage:

Heaps: 10-20-0-156, 1 TD, 132.02 rating, 50% complete. 1 TD drive.

Nelson: 3-6-0-52, 1 TD, 177.80 rating, 50% complete. 1 TD drive.

Fall Camp Stats:

Heaps: 49-81-2-610, 8 TDs, 151.51 rating, 60.5% complete. 10 TD drives, 1 FG drive

Nelson: 33-55-0-425, 9 TDs, 178.91 rating, 60% complete. 10 TD drives, 1 FG drive

I gave the passing edge to Heaps today and a push on the scoring edge.

I wish one of them could pull ahead and win the battle, but both are simply making too many plays to allow the other to get any separation.

I think we'll see a platooning of QBs the first month or so and then Jake will start seeing the majority of the time come conference play. I think the last game Riley might see more than 15-20 plays will be the USU game in Logan. After that, I wouldn't be surprised to see him limited to 10 or so plays.

I also believe that I don't think the coaches can make a wrong decision with the two QBs. I think both can play. Both can lead the team. Both can move the ball. Both can get the ball in the endzone.

maybe the qbs are both terrible. we just have receivers who cover the entire field and can go and get anything. i mean literally anything.

I dont think the passing edge was an edge at all. It was not even a contest. take away the totally blown coverage by the third D on jacobson and Nelson looks very poor at passing.

He had 52 total yards? I cant recall whether the one to Jac was the 45 or 35 yarder but take that one away and you do the math.

that would be 2 for 5 for 17 yards or 2 of 5 for 7 yards; and 0 TD's.

Again, I would actually like to see a 2QB system at least for the first 5-6 games. Nelson has alot of skills. BUt we are QB U not Runningman U.

You are probably right about that.

McKay didn't go get the one from Riley on the first drive. Amazingly enough, Riley overthrew him! McKay had a step on the DB but couldn't catch up to the throw.

I don't think either QB is terrible. I do think we have more talent at WR than we've ever had. And that's VERY exciting. And not one of those WRs will be gone next year. 2011 is going to be FANTASTIC!

There were lots of drops today. I've never played catch with both a right hander and left hander. Since they put different spins on the ball, can that affect your ability to catch?

YES.

If you include (and I know you officialy can't so spare me the "a drop is an incompletion) 5 on the numbers, hit the hands, no excuse to not catch them drops, he goes 15-20, and those are good stats. Riley had a huge gain on a blown coverage. McKay actually stopped and waited about 3 seconds before jogging into the endzon. Take that away and he doesn't look good at all.

By the way, who was #37 at running back for the offense? (Not So'oto). I bet he dropped 5 passes alone.

Absolutely. We had a lefty and a righty in camp one season, and it drove receivers nuts. When you look for the ball, you are looking for a familiar shape coming from a familiar angle. When a lefty is in the mix, the ball noses at the opposite angle, and it takes a split second longer to locate.

The reverse spin is also an issue. Your hands are conditioned from years of catching righties to catch a ball "just-so" to compensate for the spin to keep it from torquing out of your hands. That familiar hand positioning actually helps the ball thrown by a lefty escape your grips.

That said, it only took us about a week to get used to catching both. At this point in camp, lefty/righty should not be a factor for the receivers.

Dude, I know you have a serious man-crush on Heaps, but now you're just a flat our liar. McKay may have had to slow down his route to catch the ball, but if so, it wasn't much. Besides, Nelson had already over thrown McKay because he couldn't run under his 30 yard bomb so maybe he pulled up on it.

Both QBs have the arms to make all the throws that the BYU offense calls for.

Yet again, someone trying to explain away Nelson's performance to make it look worse but try and pump up Heaps' numbers.

Anyone else agree that it took 2-3 seconds of McKay waiting for the ball to drop dwon to him? Major arch, but the important things are addressing blown coverage, and we made the touchdown.

Look who is calling the Tobais Funke Blue. Eh, Papa Nelson?

I don't need to make Heaps look better than he is. He's already good. you are the one that is taking it upon himself to throw around Nelsons stats against the 2's and 3's like they mean anything... The numbers don't matter, show me on the field who is better.

If you ask everyone coming out of the scrimmage who was the better qb, 99 out of 100 are going to say Heaps. The one person who didn't, would be you Sno.

don't be foolish sno. Facts are facts. Receivers have been dropping heaps' passes, and my guess is that it's bc he puts more zip on the ball, unlike nelson's wobbly lobs.

mckay got his td catch due to blown coverage... He was wide, and yet still the pass was poorly thrown. You really think we should ignore the facts and just go purely off of numbers... Practice numbers at that?

I attended the scrimmage today and also thought heaps looked a lot better than Nelson. It was the first time I had seen heaps in person and I thought he looked pretty good for a true freshman. Heaps definitely throws a better ball.

I think the next several weeks will be interesting. Now that the fan and media initial surge is about over, next week it is time to get down to business. I think having 5 days in pads next week to evaluate will be huge, compared to 2 this week, with a fan scrimmage. By Friday, I think the 2-deep will be very settled, and it will be down to just a couple of positions (QB, TE, ILB)

I'm still excited about each QB. Each brings an exciting dimension to the game.

My point has nothing to do with adding context to numbers--you need that. However, it has to be a two-way street. The Heapsists are quick to identify every dropped pass by Heaps as a receiver snafu and every should be interception by Nelson as a bad throw, but when a receiver drops a Nelson ball, it's because it was poorly thrown, and when the defense should've intercepted a Heaps ball, it's because the defense made a great play or the receiver cut off a route.

Context is great, but if you're going to give it, paint the whole picture, not just what you like.

And BTW, too much zip on the ball is a QB problem, not a receiver problem. If receivers can't catch balls because they are thrown too hard, that is on the QB. For example, compare John Beck sophomore and John Beck as a senior. Passes across the middle are called "touch passes" for a reason.
