Does BYU have BCS depth this year?

Maybe I am just getting too excited for the season to start and getting hyped up with all the things being mentioned here, but this popped into my feable brain today.



We have really good depth at most skilled postions, RB, QB, TE, DB, LB, do you think we have BCS depth. One of the knocks on non AQ schools is they don't have the depth as the big schools. The 1's could hang with the 1's but after that the gap was extremely wide and that's were the BCS schools seperate themselfs from the rest.



I know a lot of the players on the team are young, but from what I am hearing everyone of them is an absolute stud, but I don't think because someone is an underclassman he can't be considered as part of a deep team.



I don't know if I am looking at things with very blue googles on (it wouldn't be the first time) but I believe we have incredible depth this year for most postions and it would rival most of the BCS schools.

I look at it differently. We might not have experience, but we have BCS talent among the 1s and 2s. This is because many of them were recruited and offered by BCS programs, but chose BYU instead. IF a player is offered to play for a BCS program, he is BCS talent.

While I agree with you here in principle the big question to ask is does BYU have a drop off when the 2's come in compared to the 1's. If you say not a big drop, than that's either a sign of depth or your 1's aren't that good. If you say yes, than no depth. I believe even though a lot of the players are young, there shouldn't be a big difference between the 1's or 2's.



The future looks extremely good, but the present doesn't look too shabby either.

I agree with sno. We have real talent, but it is raw. BCS has developed talent and raw talent. We are 1+ year away and need the recruiting to maintain a high level.

short answer is no; we have a lot of talent but not enough experienced players ready to bust the BCS...



enjoy the ups and downs this year, we'll be cashing in the experience sooner than you realize . 2012-13 will be loaded AND experienced.

The real question is do we have BCS speed this year. Thats why I am concerned about why we struggle with teams like Florida and TCU, and Utah. They always seem to get fast guys, and we get big strong powerful guys but sometimes we don't match up well and get schooled. I guess we will see this fall.

As for freakish athletes. I stuck around practice--ya, I couldnt get enough and was avoiding going back to my office :-) I watched our football convert run gassers with the rest of the defense. Oh my that kid can run. Of course he is trained to run fast and you could clearly see that in his technique. It was like watching old Usain Bolt destroy the field. He torched even the DB's and small fast guys. I really hope he gets put in at least on kickoffs where his speed over distance would show up. He of course has to make the team first. Imagine Goliath running faster than David. Or just recall Usain at the Olympics. It was cool.

BYU's recruiting classes are better than a lot of the AQ schools year in and year out. So BYU has "BCS caliber" depth and talent every year. It's pretty obvious that TCU, Utah, Boise State, and BYU should all be playing in BCS conferences, because they are already "BCS caliber".

We DO have overall BCS depth and would probably fall right around the middle of the 66-ish BCS teams in terms of depth.



But, we certainly DO NOT have elite BCS depth other than at TE and maybe OL.
