Day 4 QB Battle

I know it's not the QB battle, but I think the biggest note of the day's practice is how AWFUL Mitch Payne is/was. My goodness two missed FGs and blocked XP. Just unacceptable. I hope our kicking game doesn't cost us any games this year.



Day 4 QB Stats:

Heaps: 6-11-0-61, 1 TD, 0 INT, 131.13 rating, 54.5%complete, 2 TD drives

Nelson: 2-4-0-25, 1 TD, 0 INT, 185.00 rating, 50.0%complete, 1 TD drive



Fall Camp QB Stats:

Heaps: 30-44-1-308, 5 TDs, 159.94 rating, 68.2% complete, 6 TD drives, 1 FG drive

Nelson: 21-35-0-276, 5 TDs, 173.38 rating, 60.0% complete, 6 TD drives, 2 FG drives



I gave both the passing and scoring edges to Heaps today. Although I thought hard about giving it to Nelson because he had the higer passer rating, but I couldn't ignore the extra TD pass and the fact that Jake led another passing drive that resulted in a missed FG.



So both QBs have 4.5 points through four days. Each passing edge win is worth 1 point and each scoring edge is worth 1.25 points. Both have won two of each.



If BYU were playing UW tomorrow I think I would start Heaps, because he's been the more consistent over the four days. His rating has only ~88 points while Riley's has varied more than 200!

One of those missed FG's was from 51, so I wouldn't sweat that one too much.

Oh, three of Riley's four series were three-and-out. Jake had one three-and-out his three series.

Can anyone sift through to determine at which point Matt Reynolds left practice today? There seemed to be an inordinate number of sacks today, and I wondered if they came after he left the blindside to one of the Bradens.

If you combine Jake and Riley's numbers through camp, BYU's offense is going to be VERY good.



51-79-1-584, 10 TDs, 165.89 rating, 64.6% complete. 12 TD drives, 3 FG drives.



The yards per attempt is a little low (7.4 [Jake's is 7.0 and Riley's 7.9]), I'd like to see it at 9 ypa or more, but I think the low ypa right now is in part due to two days of blue zone offense so there is limited yards available.

Getting WAY ahead of yourself with this. Many of those "Stats" were in play from 20-yards and in. So did not have to drive the field. So the scoring stats are way elevated here, imo. I like the efficiency all the same, but gotta drive it 60+ to really bank on it, since most scoring drives have to go that long, on average.

On the other hand I love those stats in the blue zone they have the ability to get it in the endzone with a short field.

...not to mention that Heap's good drive was with the 1's on offense against the 3's on defense. Any of our Quarterbacks better be scoring in that situation. I was actually glad to see the defense playing better than they did yesterday, but disappointed to see dropped balls by our receivers.

The drive started against the third-team defense, but Mendenhall yanked that unit off the field after a couple of hits in which the offensive player went to the ground (a no-no). The first-team defense came on in the red zone to try to stop the surge, but Heaps audibled out of a play and sent Bryan Kariya on a sweep to the right that resulted in a 15-yard touchdown run."







Since Mendenhall went on the record saying this is still a 3 Quarterback race, I'm going to be predictable here and say I think Lark had the best drive of the day. 2's against 2's and it went the full distant of the field for a touchdown. Making a big pass and a big run. One of the guys on the twitter update thing over there to the right agreed that Lark had the best day.



Lark: 4/6, 48 yds, 2 rushes, 17 yds. with the drive ending in a touchdown, on a single full-field drill.

Nelson did have a 20 yard touchdown pass to Apo.



If you are going to mention dropped passes, you might want to mention the penalties that killed one of Nelson's drives.

And just the exact opposite of what Max was doing against Utah 2008. I was excited when I read that too.

Why does Nelson have a higher QB rating when is has a lower comp %, fewer yards and the same number of td's?

Because 50% of his attempts resulted in touchdowns.



That's why you generally want to ignore PER numbers until about 18 or so pass attempts.

Arent most defenses supposed to be further along than the offenses in fall camp? Good sign, all numbers considered. Unless of course our defense is not very good. Maybe its too hard to tell with all the new guys and probably a developing chemistry.

it seems like the offense and defense have taken turns having good days, so hopefully that's evidence of a well balanced team. It's always hard to tell whether one side is doing poorly or the other side is just doing well. Well know soon enough
