Lark Has Great Day on Day 4

The tweets are coming in about Lark being given a lot of reps and really having a good day. I can't say I expected this. I was hoping the QB picture would start to get more clear, not more fuzzy. Can't wait for the full reports from today's practice.

I am really excited to see that Lark was actually given a chance to perform today. I am all about all four of the Quarterbacks getting a chance to show off their stuff and prove it on the field.



I expect that once Munns finishes his summer classes he will also be given at least a day to get a bunch of reps to show is stuff. Maybe we were all too quick to assume that it was down to a two-man race, and Bronco was just giving Lark and Munns a chance to readjust to the speed of full 11 on 11 drills?



As for Lark's performance today, I must say I am pretty excited about. I must admit I am biased towards Lark, and would love to see him be the starter, or at least get some game time during his years at BYU. One day of practice hasn't proven anything but hopefully these means he earned a chance to take some more reps in the next several practices. While trying to be objective, its nice to see him throwing the ball well, and also running the ball well. Seems he is more of a blend of Heaps and Nelson and not so much an extreme. Combine that with his size and strength and I think he still has an outside chance.

I was just frustrated that Lark hadn't been given a chance to compete like I believed he would have. I am not opposed to Heaps or Nelson starting, and really am for the best person. If Lark competes and gets beat then I am more then OK with that.



As for his stats for the day, not bad. Lark: 4/6, 48 yds, 2 rushes, 17 yds. with his drive ending in a touchdown. Not sure what teams were playing on the drive though. If he handed it off to his former teammate Dave Foote, than that likely means it was the 3's on offense, not sure which defense was playing.

If one reads the synopsis below from byu.scout, it is clear that all statistics must be taken with a grain of salt unless you know which group of players the QBs are working with. The key indicator will be how they perform with 1st team O vs 1st team O.



Final Team Drills



-Riley Nelson got the first set of reps with the first-team offense going against the first-team defense. The drive ended with him throwing one incomplete pass on what first appeared to be a spectacular leaping grab by Zeke Mendenhall.



-Nelson got the final set of reps with the 2s on offense going against the 1s on defense and wasn't able to throw a pass due to tackle for loss at the hands of Kyle Van Noy which was followed up by a sack recorded by Thomas Bryson. -The first team defense entered the set during the last snap which was a 15-yard touchdown run by Bryan Kariya. The extra point was blocked by Jameson Frazier.



-James Lark got the second set of reps leading the 2s on offense against the 2s on defense. He finished completing 3 of 6 passes for 47 yards with David Foote capping off the set with a 7-yard touchdown run. Lark's best pass may have been a 33-yard toss to Rhen Brown on a sideline route.



-Jake Heaps then got the third set of reps with the first-team offense going against the 3s on defense. Heaps finished going 3-5 for 36 yards with passes completed twice to Spencer Hafoka with his last completion going to JJ Di Luigi for 10 yards.

QB stats--Heaps: 6/11, 61 yds, TD;

Nelson: 2/4, 25 yds, TD;

Lark: 4/6, 48 yds, 2 rushes, 17 yds.

Does anybody remember the thread on a double QB set from back in the CougarBlue days? Who thinks the proponent of that will want to change it to a 3 QB set now? ;)

When's the trading deadline and that does sound like a great idea to bring up at the next NCAA rules committee meeting.

Sounds like a deal to me. Wait why dont we just play all 5 of us at once? we'll have heaps take the snap, Nelson at slot, Lark at tight end, and Munns at fullback and I will play tailback..or center just to through them off. Really they would have no idea who was going to the throw the ball. Genius. :)



But in all seriousness, I've only recently given up my boyhood dreams of being starting QB this year, lets not open up that wound again ;)

If you could trade then the rich teams would get all of the good players players.
