Next Head Coach?

Let's say Bronco gets a call this week to become a General Authority...who's on the AD's shortlist if we needed a BYU football head coach right now? I'm not sure if this is a rule or not, but let's say that he has to be LDS.



So, who are the best LDS candidates out there right now and who would you pick to be Coach?

Anae. Holmoe would promote from within. It's been his MO so far, I don't see that changing.

If it were another year or two later I would go with doman. I think he is the head coach of the future. Alternatively I would consider Ty detmer, if he decides retirement is too boring.

Everyone's thrilled with Bronco which is why I'm expecting him to be an apostle or at least a GA. :) Have some fun and play along with who's the next best LDS heach coach out there?

Hiring from within tends to be the policy but lets say that Bronco gets translated weeks after Andy Reid is fired/resigns/retires from the Eagles. If Andy Reid called up Holmoe interested in the job how many nano seconds do you think it would take before Holmoe hired him?

Elder Mendenhall. Just because he's a GA doesn't mean he can't be "called" to continue as the HC.



On the other hand ... Detmer would work too.

that was my thought too! If he quits "suddenly" he is called to serve a mission to Provo, UT as a special type mission president. :)

Detmer already decided retirement is boring -- he is coaching high school football in Texas this year.

I know there is an LDS coach at Louisiana State, who evidently came from Oregon and is an offensive juggernaut. I wonder if he's ever been a target for BYU?

The rule is any head coach at BYU needs to be LDS, not just LDS but I believe temple recommend worthy LDS.

If in another couple years when the NFL finally decides that CHina is not getting the whole american football thing and they dont need their Ambassador of Football any longer......thats right....

Not ANdy Reid--he would never work for less than a couple mil/year. Why would he? Too many fans are hanging onto his comment of "being the guy who follows the guy who followed LaVel.

GC might be interested. :-)

My brother in law served his mission in Andy Reids ward and ate dinner fairly often at the Reid household. Reid told my BIL that his contract with the Eagles states that Reid cannot leave the Eagles to coach at BYU specifically. If the Eagles went so far as to include that in his contract then my guess would be that Reid is very much interested in being the HC at BYU. So based off of that info I would guess that Andy would be willing to take a huge paycut to coach at BYU. And he knows BYU, he knows they would never be able to match NFL salary.



Take that for what it's worth.



Personally I hope Bronco stays at BYU forever.

If you needed a new head coach immediately it would be Reynolds. He almost got the job over Bronco in the first place. I do think that Doman will be head coach in the future. Detmer needs to get some coaching under his belt so maybe he comes on as the quarterbacks coach. If Bronco lasts another five years I think Doman's the man, if we are replacing the head coach sooner then that then I don't think he will be ready. I also kind of think that Doman might end up as the OC in a couple seasons. Anae is going to get picked up by a BCS school one of these days thinking they have the next Norm Chow.

Anae is not the next Norm Chow. Let's hope Bronco stays 20 or 30 more years: When it comes right down to it, if you have been paying attention, not many people want this job when it has been available. It doesn't pay enough and has many constraints to operate within while Questing to keep some very spoiled fans happy - nuff said.

Almost getting the job twice does not mean he would not almost get the job a third time too. My guess is that he wouldn't because he will probably retire as soon as his youngest son works his way through the program. In fact, I think that is the only reason we have been able to keep him through all of the changes--so he could be there while his boys play at BYU. And boy are we glad he stayed, not only because he is a great coach, but because his kids have been awesome anchoring the line for us. As soon as the last one is gone, he we will probably go too. We will miss him.
