BYU Fall Practice - Day 3 Report

"The offense came out strong after the defense dominated the first couple of days of practice. The team practiced in shells for the first time this fall, with the practice being a bit more spirited. "

Guys, this QB race is far from over. Nelson met or exceeded Heaps in blue zone and led a touchdown drive in 11 on 11 whereas Heaps threw a pick. This from the guy who just doesn't have the stuff to run a BYU style offense. Don't get me wrong, I am rooting for no one and will be just as happy if either get picked to run the offense. I only point out that if the QB battle were so cut and dry, we would currently have a guy taking all the snaps in order to prepare for WA. Plus all you guys that seem to think we will have a losing record unless Heaps is chosen, you need to wake up and accept that Nelson may get the nod and Bronco has good reasons for choosing him.

I read Heaps threw to Chambers and was intercepted by Logan. They both playing for the two's or threes now?

Nelson got 1's vs 1's and 2's vs ones and Heaps got 2's vs 2's and 1's vs 3's.



In other words, Nelson went against the 1st team defense and scored on both his chances and Heaps went against the 2's and the 3's and scored on both his chances.

That was going the full length of the field in 11 on 11 drills. i would assume they were both going against the 1st team defense there but it isn't noted. What was noted above was done in "blue zone" drills.

The interception had to have been 1's vs 1's if Heaps was throwing for Chambers and was intercepted by Logan. The interesting bit about that play to me is that Logan returned the ball and ran into Van Noy. Van Noy is running with the 1st team D?

I was thinking the same thing after reading the reports today. Heap's pick came after a 70 yard drive but it was a pick nonetheless. i have never been one who says heaps will win us more games then nelson. i don't think there is any evidence to suggest that. My argument is that unless nelson pulls away jake should start. so far nelson has not pulled away and i don't expect him to.



if heaps gets the nod i think we should get used to the interceptions. there are bound to be more of these from a mainly throwing qb in a throwing heavy offense starting as a true freshman.

Which is why I think that Bronco may go with Nelson, I just don't think he will want a high risk freshman QB running the offense if Nelson is running the O as good. We all know how Bronco feels about Ball security.

Wow. Logan with his second interception in just three days of fall practices. Either the QB's just made stupid passes in both situations, or Logan is really stepping things up. I'd LOVE to see our defense pick off Locker a few times... have him start his "heisman campaign" with a few interceptions and a big fat L :evil:

Starting with the L is most likely going to happen. Getting picked a couple of times is more questionable.

Maybe so but its only one factor. There are a lot of other big factors to consider like the fact that we have an experienced oline and most likely a strong running game despite losing harvey.

I don't think it's so much that Nelson can't run our offense, but that by using Nelson, we are not taking FULL advantage of the extremely talented receiving corps we have. Apo. Chambers, Ashworth, and Jacobsen are all fast and athletic, and need a QB who can drill the ball and do so accurately. If our receiving corps were less impressive, I'd consider Nelson much more, but I'd rather see what Heaps can do with the pieces we've got this year.



And just think of all the young talent we've got this year... a year from now, when they are all more experienced, it'd be great to be THEN breaking Heaps in...

Van Noy is running the the 1's. He is slated as the WLB that Clawson played last year right now as Jordan Atkinson has yet to practice and has been out for "personal reasons" the first 3 days. jameson Frazier has been the 2nd guy at that spot now. I assume JA is visiting a specialist for a shoulder update, because Bronco stated his recovery has been really slow and he would most likely blueshirt. So Atkinson getting a final look makes sense in that regard and could be why he has missed the first 3 days.



Cracks me up how everyone overstates 1 pick in drills or open play by either QB. reactionary much? For all we know, Chambers blew the route. Plus, Logan is a player. And QB's throw picks. Max Hall sure did and so did Detmer. Both guys will continue to do so, let's just hope they are limited.



Personally, I love seeing the D step up and make plays. I hate it when the BYU O steamrolls the D because that usually signals a year when we have to score 30+ a game to win.

No more than people were reacting to one throw in one video on the first day.

I don't care about the picks either. My entire point when I make statements about Nelson is to point out that it currently is not perfectly clear who is the better qb or we would already have a decision from the coaches. I also am trying to set expectations for all of the Heaps worshippers because I am fully expecting the current Heaps worshippers to start the "fire Bronco" chant if Riley gets the start and we lose a game or two.

Here's how Dick Harmon summarized the day:



Jordan Pendleton wasn't on the field at the time, but he saw it as clear as everybody. "The offense had their way with us today," said Pendleton.



Blue zone series



The offense couldn't have looked more sharp Tuesday in blue zone team drills with helmets and pads. In five tries from the 20, the offense scored five times.



There was a sack on Heaps and an illegal procedure on a movement by a back with Nelson, but that were the only visible miscues against a mixture of defensive personnel that did not include all the ones at once.



Nelson took the first snaps and after running the ball to soften the front, he threw a scoring strike to Joshua Quezada who was surrounded by three defenders.



Heaps took the second snaps and after getting sacked by Jordan Richardson, he hit Cody Hoffman for 7 yards then tossed a beautiful score in the right corner of the end zone to Ross Apo.



Given the third reps, Heaps used a run by DiLuigi for three then hit Bryan Kayria for five before tossing a 3-yarder to Quezada against the third defense. Heaps second touchdown was an 8-yarder to McKay Jacobson, who came out of the slot and sprinted free in the scoring box.



Nelson then came out against a mixture of first team defenders and after using a nice run by A.J. Moore, he tossed a 13-yard touchdown to Marcus Matthews.



James Lark was given the final blue zone work with the first offense and after overthrowing everybody in the end zone on his first play, used DiLuigi for a nice 12-yard run, kept the ball himself for six and then found Kayria for a 4-yard score.



Five for five scoring.
