I know I know another big 12 post but....

So I read an article about the big 12 making a decision on the early departure of Colorado and possible fines by the end of august. It got me thinking. If the 12 invited byu and offered them nothing for the first year, Colorado could argue that the big 12 is not damaged financially by their departure and fight any fine. So could all the silence be that the big 12 wants to fine Colorado and not give Colorado the option to argue that byu will not be paid the first year? Could byu have been told if they ruin anything an invite won't come? Then maybe after Colorado pays their fine we will get an invite?



Just my thoughts, what do you think about this theory?

I have thought about this as well. I believe that the Big 12 will expand at some point but they have to wait until the exit fees with Colorado and Nebraska are all settled and done. Because, like you said, if the Big 12 invites 2 teams before the exit fees are collected then Nebraska and CU could argue that the Big 12 was not hurt by their departure.



And yes any word from BYU or anybody else that the Big 12 has been in contact with them could prove a disaster for the Big 12. Not only that but it could prove to be a disaster for BYU or anybody else in that the Texas Legislature could get involved and force the Big 12 to take Houston or TCU over BYU or anybody else. It's happened before and I'm sure the Big 12 is worried that it could happen again. This could explain the silence from BYU.

This make a lot of sense. I have thought about that before as well.

Except that the exit fees are not damages tied to a lawsuit, simply penalties for leaving early. They probably have a predetermined figure or at least some formula (which could provide some credence to your speculation).
