ESPN thankfully overlooks BYU

ESPN has a top-50 most painful moments in CFB history. Oddly enough and Thankfully, Utah's 3-0 victory ending the NCAAs longest scoring streak was not included. Which is my worst moment in CFB history at least, no need to broadcast it.



They did have this gem of a quote from then Texas coach Darryl Royal after losing to TCU 6-0. Texas was #1 at the time and this loss cost ultimately cost them the NC. He compared the Horned Frogs to Cockroaches:

I think my most painful moment was losing to TCU 50-51 in Bronco's first year. I think it was actually the first BYU game I ever attended. We scored a touchdown in overtime and then missed the PAT. TCU gets the ball and fumbles right on the goal line, BYU recovers, game over! Nope, officials overturn the call, call it a touchdown (or TCU scored from the 1 inch line or something) and win by making the PAT. Heartbreaker....

Wrong. BYU lost the game because we missed an XP - not had one blocked - just flat out missed. THAT was the reason BYU lost. Not because of some call/no call by the officials. The absolute worst thing that should have have happened to BYU after Beck hit Watkins for a 25-yard TD on the first play of OT was that it goes to a second OT.



BYU deserved to lose that game because they blew leads of 14, 18 and 12 points and gave up 21 points in the fourth quarter. And then they MISSED a simple, extra point in overtime.



If you do that, you don't deserve to win. The refs didn't cost BYU that game, BYU cost it's self that game by not converting the XP. Again, the worst thing that should have happened in that game was a second an overtime. The blame lies not with the refs for missing a call (which I think they did), but with the team for not taking care of their business.



For what it's worth, Bronco is 12-1 or 13-1 in games decided by a TD or less since then.

whoah whoah there, take it easy on the guy. It was his first game he attended and it ended in a heartbreaking fasion whether it was byu's own fault or not. dont scare away the recruits :) i agree with you that it was our own fault we lost that game. we alsmot lost the ou game last year because of missing a field goal as well. that and kicking it out of bounds on a kick off!

I was at that game. I think it last like 5.5 hours too. BYU was up big early and Beck and Watkins were hooking up well, until Watkins dropped a perfect deep ball that had 70=yard TD pass all over it. Would have put BYU up 21 and game over. After that, TCU got the MO and won it. Can honestly say that is one of the few games a team coached by Bronco has lost. They have been beat in other games, but BYU lost that one.

Seems that you guys forgot that just about every starter on the D went down in the fourth quarter. They won the game against a lot of our backups. If even half our D had survived that quarter we would have won the game.

Coaching lost the TCU game in 2005. Anae turned that into the longest game. When you are up by 17 to 21 points you don't continue to pass all the time. Run the ball and grind out the clock. TCU shouldn't have even had the ball enough in the second half to score enough points for a come back. 51 pass attempts when you were up by 21 in the first half is way too many.

Three reasons why I knew we were in trouble that day.



1) My friend had a diabetic seizure before the game. Ambulance came, gave him a shot and into the stadium we went. Just a weird situation all around.



2) BYU has just scored to go up 14-0, we the fans are still singing the fight song when TCU runs back the kickoff 100 yards for a TD. The fight song kind of just fizzled out.



3) BYU has just scored - I don't remember the score at the time - the cheerleaders are running the flags around the stadium. Unfortunately, they forgot to spell. So three flags spelling B-U-Y circle the field.



I turned to my friend and laughed. He's asked me if that was a bad omen?

I can still see, like a horrible dream, who was it, Ronnie Brown?... flying thru the air into the out-of-bounds in the southwest corner of the field in OT. It was like slow motion death. Maybe b/c it etched into my memory from the replay, the whole review process and then in perfectly dreadful climax the seemingly conspiratorial call and finish to the nightmare that give-a-way/lose-a-way game that became.

haha, thanks for the back-up. So I was a little fuzzy on the details, but the painful parts were right, we missed the PAT and they scored a touchdown that shouldn't have counted. Scoring 50 points and losing by one in a ridiculously long game is painful

I'm old enough to remember two more painful losses. In 1990, BYU was sitting in Hawaii at 10-1, with the newly crowned Heisman trophy winner Ty Detmer, ranked 13th. Hawaii dropped the Cougars like a bad habit, 59-28. Then with many complaining that Texas AM was a weak opponent in the Holiday bowl, we promptly lost 65-14.



The other occurred in 1985. BYU was 30-1, with a National Championship the previous season. The Cougars traveled to lowly UTEP where the Miners dealt BYU an embarrassing loss 23-16. Like most seasons, UTEP finished that year at 1-10. That loss hurt the most, in my opinion.

Did you know BYU is the only team in FBS to have scored 50 points in a game and fail to win the game on two separate occasions? Usually 50 points is a guaranteed victory. BYU lost to TCU 51-50 in 2005 and tied SDSU 52-52 in 1990.

I've heard that before and as much as I'd like to believe it, you'd think they could do better than 1-11 if they were cheating that badly.

If I remember right, Watkins had not one but TWO drops of sure TD passes. Nevertheless, that ball did not cross the plane, and was recovered by BYU. I have BYU at 7-5 that year in my book. ;)

We missed TWO PAT's - one in regulation, one in OT.
