Is Heaps the New Starter?

Recent article on KSL (http://www.ksl.com) - BYU Football: Is the future now for Heaps?



Couple of statements indicating he is projected starter:



Heaps' teammates Andrew Rich and Matt Reynolds had this to say about him. "Jake's a great player. Really young. That's what stood out to me is just how good he is at the age that he's at and that's why his name is what it is." said Rich.



All-MWC Offensive Lineman Matt Reynolds said, "Probably the biggest difference from when I met him to now is just confidence. He knows his guys. He's been around us long enough to get to know us and feel like we have gotten to learn to trust him."



Coach Mendenhall clearly thinks that is a good thing. "If a player isn't comfortable, he is going to struggle being at BYU. Jake is comfortable in front of the camera. He's very mature and as a BYU quarterback, he's going to need to be--because it's a visible place."

That was a Heaps article, no doubt. I don't think it was intended to emphasize that there are 3 other quality QBs fighting for that job.



I also think that Heaps will probably be the man. With maybe some Nelson thrown in to confuse everyone (a'la Weddel).

No, not according to this article...No.

I still think everyone is trying to read tea leaves on this one, and giving it a best guess. Bronco sure is not giving it away in his comments. Now, the job may have been won already, and the coaches just want the competition in fall camp to elevate play. But I still think Bronco is leaving it open as a courtesy to Jason Munns, to give him a chance to show what he has got.



Best case scenario with Heaps is a Phillip Rivers type freshman season. Interesting article and player comments. Some great parallels as well.
