What's more likely?

I'm really not sure.

I don't really think it's that far-fetched that BYU win 11. I certainly don't think we'll make it to a BCS bowl and I certainly don't think we'll beat TCU but every other game is more than winnable with the exception of the FSU game (only because it's on the road but I think this has to be the game that Bronco really wants to get revenge for from last year and as such will be close regardless of the outcome).



Only Heaps would have any prayer of passing for more than 4200 yards this year but seeing as how Hall never eclipsed that many in a single season it just isn't likely considering that there will be a learning curve for the freshman. Beck didn't even eclipse 4000 during his senior year. I think Jake would be good enough to lead us to 11-2 if all the other 'question marks' on the team come together but not good enough in his first year to eclipse 4200 yards when you know Bronco will rely heavily on the run game with our strong OL and talented stable of RBs.



Again, 4200 yards is more of an individual feat that would only come from an NFL-caliber QB (which I think Jake will be), especially in this offense. 11-2 would be much more of a team feat and is very doable when you consider who our bowl opponent will likely be. Challenging but doable. I just don't see any guaranteed losses on the schedule but the TCU game and I really think we'll give FSU a run for their money and feel fairly confident that we'll send the pukes off as losers.

If you count the bowl game, BYU definitely has a shot at 11 wins. BYU has 4 tough road games this year (Air Force, FSU, TCU, and Utah), but I'm also excited because we have quality recruits and RM's that could make an instant impact (Van Noy, Heaps, Quezada, Holt, etc) that should compliment our returning starters. Air Force is scary only because it is the second game of the season and first road game. We will beat the ewetes because BYU players do what's right on and off the field (see Collie 4:18) and because U of U players and fans are classless, arrogant trash (see Book of Hall, Table of Contents) and I hate them.



My too-early prediction is that BYU finishes 10-2 and 7-1 in conference, ranked somewhere between #15-20. We will beat Washington in a re-match at the Las Vegas Bowl and finish with 11 wins.



As mentioned, neither Beck or Hall passed for over 4,200 yards, even as seniors....I don't see a true freshman, a run-first QB, or a fresh-off-the-mission QB coming close to that mark this year....

Tough to say. If we're throwing for 4200 yards this season, it's bad news, because it means we can't control the ball with the run game and our defense is giving up enough points that we are forced to chuck it like it was 1991. With our O-line, offensive scheme, talent at RB, and experience at DB, I don't see that happening. Then again, Anae may see enough of Heaps throwing laser-guided bombs to Chambers, Apo, and Jacobsen that he decides that's all he wants to do.



I'd like to think that our first 4 games work out in such a way that we can put together a good enough game plan to beat FSU, as well as UW, AFA and Nevada, or that we'll finally scheme against TCU specifically and upset them at their place, but I think the former is more likely, and not too likely at that. But it could happen. With the right gameplan, execution, and a little luck, you can beat anybody.

Has anyone other than Detmer passed for more than 4200 in a season? Detmer would have done it 3 years if bowl stats counted back then. I believe Sarkisian would have also made the 4200 mark with bowl stats.



11-2 should be manageable in 2011--I'm less certain about the 4200 yards passing. 11 wins in 2010 equally as unlikely as 4200 yards passing in 2010.

Nelson doesn't have a prayer to get 4200 if he starts.



And Heaps will split time with Nelson if he starts with Nelson doing the "Wildcat/Pistol/Cannon" whatever you want to call it. You know, the one where you are probably not going to throw it, but might, but probably not, but maybe - and then you run a sweep for 7 yards.

John Beck won at TCU. They could not scheme him like they could Max. And they do not know much about the QB options we have for this year, so they are disadvantaged for the first time since max was a Soph in terms of preparation. I also think BSU showed us how to beat TCU, and it was the same way Beck did it--attack their corners. They are better on O now than the last 2 times we beat them, but might have some corners that could be vulnerable.

Beck did win at TCU. It was a beat down I won't soon forget, and he did it on two bum ankles. But that was TCU's second year in the conference, and before BYU had gone undefeated twice in conference play. After that, Patterson put the bullseye on BYU, and for the last two years we haven't had an answer for them on either side of the ball. I hope our coordinators have put in some serious hours solving the 4-2-5 and the TCU offense this off season.

Counting a bowl game, I'd say we have a very good chance at getting to 11 wins next year.

I mean "This year" or "this coming season," sorry for being confusing, I guess since practice starts on Saturday I can count it as this year now :D



PS--I also think we will have "great guns in 11"

All I know is that Bronco seemed to have an edge down at the MWC meetings last week, and almost took it personally at times with all the TCU and Utah talk. I like that. I think Bronco knows that he has more talent to work with now than ever before at BYU, and I think he is salivating to see what the D can do with that speed. Young talent, though. But I suspect by 2011 or 2012, our D--with his scheme and aggression--will be dominant. And maybe in 2010. These guys have somehting to prove, and I like a team coming from that position, rather than simply trying to protect. We are the hunters this year, TCU and Utah the hunted. Let' s see how it all works out.
