BOWLED OVER: Representatives from seven bowl games attended the meetings. The colorful sport-jacket wearing crowd included folks from the MWC bowls (Las Vegas, Poinsettia, Armed Forces, New Mexico and Independence), as well as two from the Bowl Championship Series (Fiesta and Rose).

Looks like we welcomed some unusual guest to our party!

First off... Reps from our newly acquired Bowl -- Independence Bowl -- who we will battle against a mid to bottom dweller ACC team.

Secondly... Fiesta and Rose Bowl reps are just realizing it's a given that a MWC foe will be crashing one of their partys in Jan.

Bring it on! Let's reload this year, just like we did in '07!

Prediction: The Las Vegas Bowl will take Boise State the first chance it gets (IE the first time they don't play in a BCS bowl) once they join the MWC in 2011.

"Bowl executive directors linked with the Mountain West Conference anticipate great bowl games in the future with Boise State... “I like the fact that they are coming and I think it’s going to be great for us,” Tina Kunzer-Murphy, executive director of the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas, said at the MWC Football Media Days... bowl partners are excited for the Broncos to play in the MWC. “I hope we get a chance to get them in a bowl game,” Kunzer-Murphy said...

“We have always coveted BYU, haven’t had a chance to get them yet,” said Bruce Binkowski, executive director of the Poinsettia Bowl."

LV Bowl has to be excited with someone other than BYU or Utah fans who dont spend much at the casinos.

BYU fans because they dont gamble--usually. Utah fans, because it takes all of their "gas-pumping" budgets just to get to the game; and when they get there they prefer to spend their excess on ETOH than gambling.

I think the bowl reps just want someone who will sell tickets to their game. BYU always sells out the LV Bowl, Utah did not. Boise probably would the first time. And of course the Poinsettia Bowl wants BYU. The Holiday Bowl got a HUGE boost from BYU going their regularly.

The MWC still needs to land a bowl with a bigger payout. Simple as that. Poinsettia Bowl has the best chance due to its location, stadium capacity, etc. Not sure it could happen though.

I don't think the LV bowl has any ties to the casinos, or cares about them at all.

Furthermore, I think BYU fans spend a ton more money in Vegas than any other fanbase that's been there.

The LV Bowl is related (and receives much of its funding from) the LV Visitors and Convention Bureau, which is funded by room tax and whose only purpose is to get folks to Vegas to stay in rooms and spend money. These are the guys behind the "What happens in Vegas" campaign.

As such, the LV Bowl is very much a product of the casino business and depends on continued support of the casinos.

BYU fans have been spending plenty of money in Vegas, which is why BYU is a prime commodity for the LV Bowl. BYU also helps to get the bowl financially solvent with the huge crowds.

BYu fans may not spend much money on gambling but what they don't they make up at the buffets.

ESPN basically owns the LV Bowl. It pays the bowl director and staff and covers sales/promotions itself. ESPN owns quite a few bowls actually. Obviously, they look to the local community to support the bowl in a quid pro quo sort of way, and the advertisers to make it work, but the bowl still relies on ticket sales to make it because it is not a cash cow. MY brother has got tickets to the LV Bowl the last 4 times BYU went from the bowl director personally, so we have had some good seats.
