To protect the anonymity of this individual I will not reveal his name. Just know that he is a significant contributor on the field whom we've all seen in action and enjoyed his contributions. He's a great athlete and a terrific friend. My past posts have included bits of information from him as well as other friends on the team. Understandably, some of you will choose to discount my comments as nothing more than unsubstantiated opinion and speculation. However, i will not reveal the identity of this individual. To do so would breech the trust of a friend.

In speaking with my friend we were discussing the current QB situation. He mentioned that he has great respect for Riley Nelson as a leader but would be shocked if Heaps doesn't start. Just to clarify, he went on to say that he wouldn't be surprised to see Riley start the opener because of his current status as a team leader, but feels that Jake will likely assume the role as starter this season. He also said not to count Lark or Munns out as they both have the abilities of a great pocket passer (he also pointed out that Lark is surprisingly fast).

On Jake Heaps...

I asked how Jake compares to QB's he's played with now and in the past. He responded with a very firm, "it's not even close." he said jake's ability as a passer is incredible. His technique, footwork, motion, checkdowns, and accuracy is uncanny. (He especially emphasized the accuracy compared to the others.) He mentioned the defense has been throwing everything at him in spring and summer workouts and Heaps has handled it all like a veteran signal caller. He said with out a doubt Heaps throws the best ball and the receivers prefer catching a Heap's ball over any other. Lastly, he felt the offense has it's best chance at performing at similar levels as the last few years with Heaps under center. His talent is a perfect compliment for this system and puts the team in a position to move the ball effectively.

Again, take it for what it's worth, but if you're anything like me you'll relish this little bit of insider perspective.

*on a side note: he also mentioned that Ross Apo is "unbelievable" amd possibly the best athlete he's ever seen. (Andrew Rich backed this up with similar statements yesterday at MWC media days.)

If you can't reveal the source, don't post it. It's the single biggest problem in journalism today: anonymous reporting. It is nearly impossible to vet an anonymous source. If he doesn't want you to reveal who he is, then he shouldn't be telling you. As a journalist, it's lazy and poor journalism to not reveal your sources. This isn't Deep Throat and the President breaking the law. This is college football, his identity needn't be protected. If he's afraid his name might get back to the coaches, then he shouldn't be telling you in the first place.

And for the record, he basically said nothing. Certainly nothing more than we already know. He wouldn't be surprised if Riley starts, and he wouldn't be surprised if Heaps starts and he doesn't think Lark and Munns shouldn't be discounted. Gee, isn't that basically what we've all been saying. There are good arguments for just about every QB on the roster and no clear idea as to whom is going to start.

I'm very excited for Apo, you don't get offered by Texas at WR without serious speed and skills.

Ditto, but I don't necessarily believe it. It sounded like Cougarboard from the get go. I also thought the comment about being way above past qbs he has played with unusual. Max was pretty dang good at putting the ball on the money.

Journalism? Seriously? Let's get off the high horse and let this site be a message board. We aren't even close to journalism.

Anyone who is taking what is said here that seriously needs to relax just a bit.

I don't doubt that Heaps is very good, but better than any other QB. I agree, Max Hall was a pretty good and accurate passer, but what about John Beck. Beck was extremely accurate, especially his last year. Perhaps this Wide Reciever did not play with Beck, but to say that Heaps is better than any other QB may be a stretch. Perhaps he meant better than other QB's in the system right now. Maybe better for any other freshman to come into the system...that I would believe more. That being said, I hope Heaps is our started and think he will have an immediate impact on the team.

p.s. I like the insider information and don't get to caught up in the journalism argument. Thanks for posting it.

The anonymous postings do stink of cougarboard and unless a poster is a trusted longtimer, it's not unreasonable to question an anonymous thread. You go down a slippery slope when you stop questioning every anonymous source that has an opinion or scoop on the internet. I dont' love them, and I rarely trust them.

However, sometimes it's hard not to share info gotten from players when you know that you cannot use their name for obvious reasons. I found myself in that quandary when the Manti Teo stuff went down. I had heard from 3 players, 2 of which were at the party, exactly what happened and obviously I couldn't name names; to make matters worse, rustyshacklenerd aka steed would not accept that without names.

I have not jumped into the fray much on the Heaps starting issue, because simply nothing we discuss will change the outcome. We simply dont' know enough about how either would actually handle washington and beyond (honestly is there much difference between high school in seattle and utah state? ). My only point(s) on this ever was that #1 Heaps isnt' going anywhere; he and his family are literally fully invested; so stop worrying about him bolting if Riley gets the nod and #2 A redshirt would not hurt

I suspect that we might actually see a Detmer like freshman year where both players get snaps this season; considering the fact that Detmer parlayed that into a Heisman trophy later in his career, I don't see how that would be a bad thing.

Strap in and enjoy the ride; I expect it to be bumpy this year. but considering the last 4 seasons, I can handle 1 bumpy season to usher in a decade of dominance.

I'm sorry my journalistic abilities don't live up to your standard. I wonder if you would also question the veracity of similar features found in every issue of ESPN the magazine where 'Player X' reveals insider info about teams, players, coaches, etc. in professional sports. This is an online forum for crying out loud-- take EVERYTHING with a grain of salt. I've been a longtime follower of cougarblue/cougar corner and I know all of the regular posters on here. I also despise cougarboard. I'm not out to prove anything and could care less if anybody believes what I post. For those that want info I'll gladly post more

By the way, my friend (or should we call him 'Reciever X'), never asked that I not reveal his name in fear of it getting back to coaches or administrators. Rather, I chose not to reveal out of respect for my friend.

Yes, I know what I posted is not a huge revelation on the situation, but believe it or not, players are still very political in discussing teammates and coaches even to friends (this has been the case of every friend I've had on the team over the years).

I will clarify a couple of points however.

In relation to Heaps being the best QB he's ever been around. He was saying this in the context of those attributes listed mechanics, footwork, motion, accuracy, etc. He wasn't saying Max Hall wasn't accurate or threw a bad ball by any means. He was saying that Jake does all of those things almost effortlessly and throws a very good ball as a result.

For the record, 'Reciever X' never played with John Beck but I will personally attest to John's accuracy and arm strength. I've played catch with Beck (both baseball and football) and I was almost scared to catch a ball from him it was coming so fast. One of the funniest/coolest things I've ever seen involved Beck's arm strength and accuracy. We were playing kickball for FHE, I was in left field, Beck was playing 3rd base. A girl came up to kick and laid a slow roller down the 3rd base line. Beck charged at it and I remember thinking there's no way we're getting her out. So Beck charges it, fields it cleanly, and throws a laser towards first. Not only did the ball hit the girl in stride right before she stepped on first, but the impact on her shoulder sent her flying to the ground. It was incredible!

Back to the issue at hand.....

My friend essentially told me all the receivers like catching passes from Jake the most, he's the best fit for our system, and he would like him throwing the ball behind center come gametime. He also liked the idea of Nelson rotating in on option or wildcat plays to mix things up a bit.

I forgot to mention. I asked if Jake is a prima donna or has any sense of entitlement to which he vehemently responded 'No, he's the exact opposite.' He said Jake knows he's good, and he's confident, but he's humble about it. He feels he's using his abilities to gain their trust, but never puts himself above his teammates and pretty much acts like any other freshman na dis eager to learn and earn his playing time.

I'm with you on all of your points Craigo. I don't kow you personally but I know we have mutual friends both on and off the team. Therefore i trust your sources and your posts. I too have a hard time taking anonymous sources seriously, but also struggle with what info I should share/divulge from insiders. As a result I typically don't share or post much of the info I have.

Heaps basically is a RS since he enrolled early and took part in spring ball, and had all summer long to work out with the guys. Not the case if was a true frosh, since he'd be just getting acquainted now with the team, workouts, etc.

Yes and no. While he does have a spring ball behind him, an RS FR still has a fall camp before heading into his first year of playing. So a RS FR would have a fall, spring and fall camp of experience. Heaps will have a spring and a fall.

I'm sure this will steer the topic way out of bounds but here I go anyways... Just about every New York Times article I read is based on someone "not authorized to talk to the media" but presents vital and insider news that I enjoy reading about. I'd probably say that more than half of the articles printed on military topics today are based on sources that wish to remain anonymous. Are you saying you'd prefer that all news stories that someone won't comment on publically should vanish? That's a huge slice of the pie and not at all Constitutional role of the Press is supposed to play.

Sorry for the diatribe, it just kept coming - especially since I don't think any of us are journalists. :D if anonymity keeps people talking, let them stay anonymous cause I'd rather hear the story and judge for myself.

Very good post, I highlighted part of it I wanted to comment on. People today are lazy, they can't do their own research, so they want everything right in front of them. If you can't decide for yourself what is real and what isn't, and learn how to temper your expectations of things, you shouldn't be online. Worst of all, you shouldn't be on a chat room/forum. It could be worse, people could be out here name-dropping like crazy. Then in order to post, it wouldn't have to do with what you know, but WHO you know, and that would exclude a lot of us from posting.

Thanks to the OP for the post and thread. I freakin' drink anything BYU football with no apparent relief to my thirst, so anyone with a well of information, keep it comin'.

I completely agree. If journalists were limited to only getting stories from people who were authorized to share the news or from people who were willing to forgo anonymity there wouldn't be much need for journalists at all. Their job is to get the story, period. Cut through the red tape, find the person, get it out in the open. Obviously there are ethical and legal limitations to freedom of the press but in general there's no better way to fight corruption, obstructionism, and good-ol-boy-ishness than giving the press a very very long leash.
