"And it came to pass" ever again?

Was just reading that Detmer led the most plays in BYU history, 1795. 1,530 of those (85%) were pass plays. Seems to me Bronco is closer to 50/50 in his play calling. Any way under a shiny passing QB that we would ever again have so many of our plays be passing plays?

Your stats are off. By my count in 1989-1991, BYU ran 1377 passing plays and 1223 rushing plays. That's about a 53-47 split.

Well, the Daily Universe is certainly not "the most correct of any book"...this is what they said:



"Detmer’s No. 14 jersey spent more time on the BYU gridiron than any other Cougar uniform in history. He holds the school record for most plays (1,795), pass attempts (1,530) and pass completions (958). " Maybe the 'most plays' only refers to passes and his runs, and does not include handoffs to other runners...in which case I'd be surprised that he was sacked/ran on 15% of his plays.

Gotta be it. Cougarstats.com has him with 1,530 pass attempts and 265 rushing attempts.

You are correct. Otherwise, one of our great offensive linemen who started all four years, would have the most offensive plays.



The BYU record is only for plays where you were the ball carrier or the ball thrower or the ball catcher.



In reality it would be way to time consuming and difficult to count every down played by every player.

I believe the most plays would likely be held by Jan Jorgenson. I believe he started every game in his career from 2006 to 2009.

regardless of the specifics, I've watched some of the replays of BYU games from the 80's and early 90's on BYUTV (I was a little too young when they were originally played to take much notice), and it's obvious that back then we rarely ran the ball. It must've been a stuff sell to get RB's to play for us...."come to BYU and pass block all game!"



In answer to the original question, no, I don't think we'll ever be that lopsided offensively again. Lavell Edwards' offense was revolutionary. No one knew how to stop it, so there was no reason to run the ball. I remember watching a Steve Young interview where he said something to the effect of, "what I remember most during those games at BYU was, everyone was open, all the time."

It's not like that anymore, defenses have caught up and you need to have a more balanced attack to be successful.
