Can BYU Make Independent Football Work?

I just lost my long list of ideas of how BYU could make it work. Not weather they should or not. What ideas do you have using the new Broadcast studios? Here are a few that I came up with.



They start a new BYUtv Sports channel.

KBYU uses sponsors for the game broadcasts to earn their money.

BYU does the production and some channel picks up the games live. BYU gets paid for the production.

BYU sells the rebroadcast rights.

Of the 4 independent programs, 2 are sponsored by the US Govt. and a third is Notre Dame and has a National Following. As much as we think BYU has national appeal, they ain't ND or Navy or Army. They do have a very strong regional appeal, which might be enough to make it work, but I doubt it. The new broadcast building is for the spread of the Gospel, not for the spread offense. [/pun]

Actually the Harmon date line is August 2007. Note the comment on page 2 that neither Utah nor BYU will ever get invited to a BCS conference.



I do agree with Harmon's point that going independent - in football or totally - has hugh drawbacks.



I say that BYU should now use its clout (and TV channel) the way Texas wants to try. Interesting that Texas wants to have a BYU type channel and use it to promote and profit from its athletic program: it wants to be the BYU of the Big12(10). At the same time, BYU should use its muscle to become the Texas of the MWC.

BYU could make anything work, they have more $$, fanbase, supply, & resources to do anything, including joining better conferences...



Question should be: Will they ever make a decision to do something.

The article claims it cost $69M to start the network. I doubt that our studios cost that much or would cover all of the cost but it is a huge start.

I too noticed that this article is from 3 years ago. He may have been wrong about Utah getting invited to a BCS conference, but his second to last paragraph was spot on.


For the Cougars, going independent would be like giving Lindsay Lohan the key to a school bus.
Reading that made me double check the date line.
