Do Not Open Unless You've Seen Inception!

Spoiler alert--this thread is devoted to discussing the end of Inception, so if you haven't seen it, stay away. Consider yourself warned.

So.....the ending. The spinning top, spinning, wobbling, spinning, wobbling.



So, is Cobb still in a dream, or did he really get back to his kids?



I think he's dreaming still, but I am only going off of one viewing so far. Here's my argument:



The kids were the same age as in his memory, and wearing the same clothes (I think....like I said, only one viewing). Also, the whole ending sequence just had that "dream come true" vibe---everything just seemed too perfect. I think he's still in dreams.

I also believe that he is still dreaming and here are some of my reasons why. Like sno, I have only seen it once...



1. The kids have never aged, nor changed clothing in all the time he's been gone? He makes it sound like a long time.

2. The kids are in the exact same spot and position that he always remembers them in when they turn around and you see their faces (his dream come true).

3. The top never topples, it wobbles, but never falls.

4. There is at least one other point in the show where he spins his top, but doesn't see the results.

5. You never see him going anywhere, he always just appears at the spot where the action is occurring. Since he makes such a big deal to others in explaining to them how they can recognize a dream this is important.



That and just a general sense of dreaminess about the final sequence, it just felt really dreamy.

It was a total long con. Here he thought he was planting an idea in someone else, when all along, they were planting the idea in him that if he did this job and succeeded, he could go home. I also liked how they talked about how taking each level deeper in a dream gave them more time. So basically, it going home was the next level down the rabbit hole, he had like 200 years to be there.

So went and saw it. Pretty good. A bit confusing. I think he was dreaming. Not really bothered by not knowing either way.

Finally saw it last night JUST so I could participate in this thread!!

I love that they didn't actually TELL you whether he was dreaming... I think part of the reason he didn't look to see if the top fell at the end was because it may not have mattered to him at that point. Mol had him convinced "what do you want to believe!"



Also, everytime I saw anyone hook up to that machine to get their sleeping chemical, for some reason I associated it with the matrix where they were hooking their minds up to a single "dream". then I realized that had nothing to do with it, and people's dreams simply merged somehow. If there was a weakness ot the movie I think that was it; I've never once had a dream that others could remember, and I don't see how somehow dying in a dream sends them to a shared purgatory conscious that anyone can get to simply by "dreaming deeper".



actually the ending I was kind of hoping for was that Leonardo and Mol went so deep into the dream, that somehow they got confused and the Mol we saw was ACTUALLY the real Mol trapped in Leo's mind and not just a memory. That would have been cool. He wakes up after those 50 years dreaming, and she's dead next to him and he gets blamed for killing her. Now, she's mad because he took her with him and refused to spend all his time in the dream world which she tries to convince him is the REAL world.



I like Real Mol in Leo's head better. but spinning top ending was good too.



I think there's a 55:45 chance that it was real but I think the doubt is what makes the ending great.

Finally, finally, finally saw this movie (I'm a pretty big Christopher Nolan fan, so it's strange that it took me this long). Enjoyed it, think the ending is totally debatable and will never have a clear-cut answer. There is one thing, however, that I have to nitpick: the idea that planting an idea in someone else and making them think that they've come up with it is radical or almost impossible. Here's a simple example:

I thought about halfway through that Leo was in a coma, and that was why he couldn't go home. I would have liked to see that, more.
