Anytime you see BYU as a 7 point favorite or less vs. AFA, its time to bet the house (figuratively).

so for us un-educated in the betting ways of the force, can someone describe what a -7 means?



That means we are a 7 point favorite and you can either bet that byu will win by that many points, or will win by fewer points/lose.



and if that's the case, are we really favored to beat washington by LESS than Florida, despite FLorida being an away game? gamblers are wierd.

The house tries to get the same amount of bets on each side to limit their risk. So it is more the public than the expected outcome. A lot of BYU fans don't gamble so the odds sometimes are skewed.

Actually, we are "favored" to beat UW by 3.5 points (from a gambling perspective), but FSU is favored to beat us by 7. Which ever name has the (-#) next to it is the favorite, and the number is the expected margin of victory. So if you were to take BYU in the BYU/FSU game, and BYU ends up losing, but by 3, you actually win the bet, because BYU lost be less than 7.

As I mentioned before, I think BYU can cover all the posted lines (i.e. lose to TCU by less than 10 and FSU by less than 7, while beating everyone else by the required amount).



And while BYU fans are not heavy bettors, a lot of Vegas folks follow BYU and a lot of national folks bet BYU. That BYU has so many early lines up means that there is a lot of interest in betting BYU football....

As an occasional betting man I can vouch that a lot of folks, especially those from the intermountain region, bet BYU. There was a time in the late Beck/early Hall years the cougars covered the spread in something like 20-24 straight games. I never understand why it was expected the likes of UNLV, SDSU, Wyoming would even come close to the spread Vegas was putting out, but it made it easy for awhile. I worry about the UW, TCU, and FSU spreads at this point with new qb and newer rbs, but I have faith the cougs are gonna be just fine this year Riley, Jake, Josh, JJ whoever!

BYU -7 vs. AFA is one that I would take - even this year.

So according to the guys that pay off the officials to throw games and pay players to point shave, etc., BYU will start out 5-2. Optimistically, that sounds about right. I hope for better but really expect a little worse than that start. I do expect a strong finish. Hopefully everyone stays healthy and we whip the Utes.
