Top Recruits in State?

Is this somewhat accurate for the top recuits in Utah? Looks like we have 6 of the top 10 and 2 are undecided.

Ryker Matthews being a 2-star is a joke. That kid is a 4-star lineman right now. Bet he is one of the strongest lineman in the country. I know the guy who trains him, the guy is in Strongman Competitions nationally ranked, and says Ryker is a beast and getting stronger by the day. Can already put up 25+ reps at 225. For 17, that is awesome. Plus, he moves well. He will be the #2 recruit of out Utah when all is said and done. So BYU really needs to get him and Langi, and they can then consider the class to be as solid as last year, minus only a stud QB.

I'd take that class and who cares we didn't get a 5 start QB. We should be in good shape the next few years.

Ryker Matthews is basically training like a Strongman competitor. Dude is turning monster tires, chucking stuff heavy stuff over tall heights, etc, all that crazy stuff. In other words, the kid is getting actual strength and learning leverage. If his blocking technique is good, he can be a total beast. I hope he signs with BYU. My friend who trains him is a BYU fan, and is working on him too. And like I said before, he and Jake Heaps get along great and hang. So that really helps the chances.

He's a BIG BOY! Who else is going after him, other than Utah and Kansas?

Yeah, I don't know how Asiata is a 4 star and Matthews isn't. Matthews offer sheet hasn't blown up yet but it won't be too much longer until it does unless he decides to commit early. He is one BYU should save a scholie for until at least December though. Frankly, I don't think anyone is worth waiting for past December, even Langi. If they can't make a decision by then, we need to move on to other options. We've been burned too many times holding scholies for some of the "glory seekers" that end up somewhere else. But I wouldn't be surprised to see Matthews commit somewhere here soon. Hopefully, it's to BYU. We are really going to be putting a lot of linemen into the NFL in the next few years. M.Reynolds, Hansen, T. Brown, B. Brown, probably H. Reynolds... Ryker could be one of the next ones on the list if he comes to BYU.

Rivals now has Ryker as the #1 recruit in the state ahead of Harvey Langi. They also bumped him up to a 4-star. He is the #12 national recruit for his position, and ranked 104th nationally overall. The kid is about to get a TON of offers because I know he just got on the radar for many schools. BYU getting him would be a major pick up. I hope jake heaps can work his magic with this kid, and that bronco ups the stakes for getting him, because I know Utah is recruiting him really hard.

Not good - Jake was very effective (re: recruiting Apo & Stout!) But, NCAA rules are NCAA rules.

Well, considering that Heaps and Ryker are buddies, hang out on occasion, etc., I'd say Heaps still can recruit him through friendship. NCAA rules can't stop buddies from hanging out and that means a lot here. Friendship can be the best recruiting tool. This is what I was referring to when I said said I hope Heaps can sway him.

That is true but risky nonetheless and I wouldn't be suprised if they told Jake to error on the side of caution with things like this.

Didn't Pres Hinkley say that every new recruit needed to be fellowshiped?

Maybe Jake can get Ryker an In-N-Out double double - animal style - w/ whole grill onions - make that 2! At 6' 6", 270 lbs. & 17 y/o - he's a growing boy!!!! Take care of him Jake!!

All I know is that if we land Mathews, our O-line is going to be MASSIVE. The size of these guys is unbelievable lately. 6'5" would be a short guy on that line. If we don;t go power and run it down guys throats a lot, it would be a missed chance because our O-line will be dominant and huge in 2-3 years time.

Just remember, Langi and Mathews will be letting down nearly 14 million members if they chose other than BYU. :(



I have seen that Mathews is the #1 Utah recruit per Rivals and Langi is the #1 Utah recruit per Scout. Also, nearly all BYU's commits are 3* rated at Rivals while only have are such at Scout.



As I said on another thread, I want to see Langi in Cougar blue more than any recruit in this class. OLinemen are easy to get for BYU. RBs of Langi's caliber, not so much. I had to go back to Staley's high school clips to find a back more exciting than Langi who wore BYU blue in the past or present, even over Q and Unga.

Yeah, I bet Bronco and the compliance office have instructed Heaps on what he can and can't do now that he's a student and current team member in regards to recruiting activities.

Here is Rivals list of the top from Utah.

Go to the link and type "Utah" into the search bar and it pulls up the Utah list. I find it curious that Harvey Langi has no speed listed on any recruiting site. makes me wonder how fast he is. I know he is talented, but if he is average speed, takes some of the shine off. Anyone know how fast he is? 4.5 or better?
