Germany Over England

Upon hearing that Germany just defeated Britain in the world cup, a German diplomat sauntered over to a few British diplomats at a US State Department gathering. In a smart alec tone, he says: 'it appears we just beat you at your national sport.' The British diplomat dryly replies, 'I believe we also have beaten you at your national sport. Twice.'

Incorrect. The best team from USA's group was the USA. We won the group. We were the best team.

Agree to disagree. We tied them on a fluke. That goal kick shouldn't have scored. They were a better team that game and this tournament, even though they were very mediocre and disappointing.

ah the classic - we-were-better-but-we-lost-the-game debate.



Doesn't this automatically qualify for major sports status just on the nature of the debate alone?



(btw, Oklahoma should have beaten BYU too)

Fluke goals count the same as "real" goals. We scored on Algeria which England didn't do and we scored twice as many goals as they did against Slovenia.

Not to mention we had two goals taken away. It's nice to cite the one "fluke" goal that we had and not talk about the other two...

The whole "moral victory" thing is lame here. Our pod was terrible either way.

Like I said earlier, none of the four deserved to move on. The next round proved that.



I wonder how giddy some of you would be to see our Dream Team finish 16th in the Summer Olympics.

But no one is claiming our 2010 soccer team was a "Dream Team" that was chock full of the best players to ever play the game. Were you expecting this team to win the World Cup?



Where was the "moral victory"? Has anyone been claiming we should have beaten Ghana? The only who seems to think so is you and three things are quite obvious to me in this argument/debate:



1) You clearly didn't watch the game if you think somehow a) Ghana is a bad team and b) that the US should have won that game. Ghana is not a bad team and they played better than the US on Saturday by taking advantage of the few opportunities they got.



2) You seem to think the US is a much better team than they are. This also proves that a) you don't follow the US Men's National Team that closely or you wouldn't think they are world beaters and one of the best teams in the world and b) you don't follow soccer and/or international soccer for the same reasons.



3) You don't really care about soccer and are just trying to make an argument to simply make an argument. Seriously Mars, you've been contrarian on quite a few issues, but on this argument you're just being silly and being contrarian to simply be one. Your arguments on this instance are weak.

so finishing where we did, we adequately met expectations as one of the best soccer teams in thw world.



Certainly not better than the 15 or so in front of us, but certainly better than the 230 behind us.
