The weekend of that decision, Heaps was sitting in an LDS chapel near Seattle, preparing to perform his duties as a priest at the sacrament table when his phone started vibrating. He took the phone out of his pocket and read a text from Apo announcing he'd decided to go to Texas. Heaps, the MVP of the Elite 11 QB camp held in California in 2009, thought he and Apo would someday play at BYU. Jake looked at his father in the audience and shook his head, obviously upset. Heaps finished his duties and left the LDS chapel. Instead of sitting by his family, he went outside and phoned Apo. It was a heated exchange. Heaps vowed to take the issue up with Apo when they met at a Nike Combine at Stanford University a few weeks later in the spring of 2009.
Heaps said Apo's text that Sunday ticked him off. Apo agreed; he's on the record saying Jake Heaps was hot. So, what changed Apo's mind about his pledge to Texas? Apo explained it this way to friends. "At the Nike camp, Jake was by far the best QB and threw balls no one else could," Apo said. "It was like a chemistry thing that Jake knew where I was breaking and how I would react to the defenders. Also, that the ball would be right on the money every time." Apo said it kind of "freaked him out" that the chemistry was so good. "Jake would do the same thing with the other receivers, and they would all talk about it and laugh. It was like the defensive backs could not do anything about it. And the DBs would get real frustrated. After that camp was over, I just knew we had something special together." Apo contacted Texas, saying he'd changed his mind. He then joined Heaps at a news conference to jointly announce their decisions for BYU almost a year ago in Salt Lake City."
