Did I Miss This Max Hall article?

Having watched all these guys from the 1970s on, I must respectfully disagree with placing Hall anywhere in the top 5, or even the top 7. I would start with his pathetic performance against TCU in 2008, with BYU entering the game as a top ten team. Hall's deer in the headlights behavior that game set the standard for his career. The 4th quarter of the 2008 Utah game was an equally pathetic performance. And even in the OU game, Hall's overall play was weak until the end of the game. It was the BYU defense that played over its head. Every 3rd down seemed like a painful exercise in Hall's weaknesses.



Ultimately, I would put the standard as what QB I would want in a big game. Would I want Hall before Beck, Doman, Sark, McMahon, Young, Detmer, Wilson, Bosco,or Nielsen? Not really. Now, did Hall do well for BYU and put up good numbers? Yes. Does that put him in the top 5? No way....

Wow - I have to side w/Mars on this. 88Coug - I think you're a little tough in your assessment of Max Hall. From the article, Ken Wisenhunt & the Cardinals like what they see. That says something.



Obviously - all athletes - especially QB's - have a developmental curve. Football is a QB driven sport. By the time he graduated, Max grew to a skill level that that puts him in rarified air among BYU QB's.

The problem with this is it is a lot easier to remember the 'deer in the headlights' performances of the more recent QBs than it is of the earlier ones. As time passes, we remember the good moments and lose focus on the bad.



You want to talk about deer in the headlights, every single qb that has ever played at BYU has had one, except possibly Bosco? But I can't be certain.

I think my ranking would be:



1. Detmer

2. McMahon

3. Young

4. Bosco

5. Sarkisian



Beck and Hall would probably next if I were doing a top 10, but for me, any of those outside of the top tier of Detmer, McMahon, and Young are harder to rank.

Where would Nielson and Wilson go or is that way before most of the people's time here? Virgil Carter was awesome also for what he had to work with and what he did with it.

I have a real hard time not putting Hall in the top 3. His production is simply unparalleled. His rankings:

#1 in starts

#1 in wins

#2 in completions

#2 in touchdown passes

#2 in passing yards

#2 in TD:INT ratio

#5 in passer rating

#6 in QB rushing yards

2 of the 9 best passer rating seasons ever in BYU hisotry

Max Hall was a VERY good QB for BYU and one of the three best to ever play at BYU. My top 5:

1. McMahon

2. Detmer

3. Hall

4. Young

5. Bosco

The thing I loved about Max Hall... He could thread the needle. He was aggressive, and that's something you don't teach, and he had that from the very beginning.



Yeah it was a double edged sword at times. He did throw some pics, but the good outweigh the bad BY FAR!

Agreed. His pro career was much brighter than his college one. His college stats:

1981: 56 comp, 112 att (50%), 5 INT, 5 TD, 731 yds, 110.6 rating; 53 rush, 233 yds, 5 TD

1982: 230 comp, 367 att (62.7%), 18 INT, 18 TD, 3,507 yds, 140.0 rating; 114 rush, 407 yds, 10 TD

1983: 306 comp, 429 att (71.3%), 10 INT, 33 TD, 4,346 yds, 168.5 rating; 102 rush 444 yds, 8 TD

His NFL career is what made him famous, but the guy did finish 2nd in the Heisman voting in 1983. That speaks to his college career. He was no slouch.

Absolutely true, at least for me. He used to attend my ward in Northern California during summer camp.
