Sunday for the the Utes - this will be interesting to watch

So Utah gets into the PAC10. Maybe one of the most interesting aspects to this is how it will impact Sunday activities up on the hill. We've all been hearing how the recruiting for the Utes may begin to steal the best LDS in-state prospects because "you can play here in Utah against PAC10 competition AND live among a great LDS communitiy". We'll that may be true, but they probably won't mention the part about having to play games on Sunday. Maybe not so bad for the player's, but how about the family of the players, the fans and the event staff? I found a sports calendar for UCLA for the current year. This is no trivial matter. I'm willing to bet the effect this will have on ALL of their sports except for football wasn't really thought though. And if they think the PAC 10 will give any consideration to not scheduling Utah on Sunday then someone is smoking something. Here's a sample of UCLA's Sunday schedule for 2010 up through the end of October. Turns out Sunday play isn't just a once-in-a-while occurrence - the Utes will be playing almost EVERY Sunday of the year.

Looks like the Ute Ute fans will be taking their kids to go see the Utes play right after church (or after sacrament meeting if they have the late block schedule)

I might take comfort in this, except I could care less if Utah steals any recruits from us in those sports.

One thing I did notice is there isn't a money making sport on that list so it won't really matter if nobody shows up to those sports because they don't now. It is football and men's basketball that will matter.

It is an interesting question. Are these LDS athletes going to compete regularly on Sundays? What happens when half a team refuses to play on a Sunday?

The point of the topic is that the shift to the Utes athletic department having to play almost every Sunday in some sport means the dynamics of the athletes, students, fans, family and staff will be changing. And yes, the men's basketball team will very likely play on Sunday as UCLA and Kansas did last year:

This is a good question. I have a nephew that is on the Utes mens swim team, (that really pains me to say that!) When he went on his mission he had a lot of the team at his farewell including a lot of the non members. I think a little more than half of the team is non members. I will have to ask him how this may affect him now if he has any meets on Sunday but more importantly how the coaches will react.

If the Utes wanted to they could petition the NCAA to be exempt from Sundays. Wouldn't the PAC-10 have to honor it? They might have to forfeit a couple of games but the pressure would make the conference change thier policy. No?

That swooshing sound you hear is all of the U's TRUE LDS athletes leaving for a school that doesn't make them play on Sundays.

Well, the soon-to-be starting QB at BYU is a true freshman that came to BYU giving the impression that he's going to forgo a mission to improve his chances of playing in the NFL, a Sunday job.



I'm thinking that the number of LDS athletes (the BYU women's rugby team excluded) that have a problem competing on Sunday is not very big.



Does the U really market itself to LDS athletes as a Mormon-friendly environment?

My thoughts exactly. It depends on the kid. Many LDS kids would have no problem playing on Sunday, since many of our LDS kids going on to Pro-Sports from BYU don't have a problem playing on Sunday. The decision of whether or not to play on Sunday is a decision for each athlete. Props to Eli Herring for being one of the only sure first round draft picks to say he would not be playing in the NFL because of the requirement to play on Sundays. But it is a personal decision for each athlete.



I would think that it will have some influence on a few recruits, but I wouldn't expect wholesale changes to the recruits Utah gets. The increased recruiting they will get for playing in the PAC-10 will far surpass the few LDS kids that will not play on Sunday going somewhere else.



Ultimately, I think the move to the PAC 10 will result in a steady decline in the church's influence at U. That will be sad for those good LDS families in Salt Lake that are die hard Ute fans...I know blaphemy, but some of them do exist.

There's a big difference between working on a Sunday and playing a hobby sport on a Sunday. Maybe there shouldn't be, but there is.

There's a big difference between working on a Sunday and playing a hobby sport on a Sunday. Maybe there shouldn't be, but there is.

I agree; Pro sports isn't the only profession that BYU students land where they work on Sundays. Firemen, Astronauts, Policing Utah sporting events for beer throwers, and monitoring U grads at gas stations.

Thanks for the clarification - good thing I used the term 'digital device' and not 'digit device'! On a side note, I recently saw the TCU mascot in person attending a Utah gymnastic meet. It looked much more 'horny' then it appears to be on TV.
