We haven't discussed the obvious advantage that Utah has: they have a far superior AD to BYU.

I disagree whole-heartedly.
Utah blows at every sport except football's four-year cycle and gymnastics. Chris Hill has overseen the decline of Utah athletics in nearly every other aspect, the poster child of which has been men's basketball.
BYU on the other hand, is in a golden-age for athletics, arguably the greatest four-year span in the history of the school. Much of that has to do with Holmoe's hiring of coaches who fit--Bronco and Rose. How well has Hill done in hiring coaches outside of Whittingham? He's been a dismal failure.
The one place where Hill has the edge would be the PAC-10 invite. If you think that had anything to do with the AD's respective negotiating ability, you are grossly mistaken--it had everything to do with politics and religion--BYU was out of the PAC-10 at the moment a 14-year old kid went into the woods to pray.
Pointing fingers at Tom Holmoe is simply ungrateful and plain ignorant.
Let's take that even further. Utah backed into the Pac 10 invite. They were literally the last choice. No matter what Larry Scott says, they were the backup plan and Pac 10 fans are not happy... their conference has been diluted even more. BYU could win back to back national championships and not get in the Pac-10 due to relgious bias so what are we upset about? That little brother got a piece of the pie? (who cares)
BYU still has quite a few options, not-the-least of which is to stay in the MWC and when these last few recruiting classes mature, go undefeated a couple years in a row. If BSU can start out in the top 5 of the rankings and win out, then BYU can do the same; eventually the Big 12 or autobid will happen. Have a little faith.
Playing Utah in the future is a wash they get up for us even when they have a piss poor team (and they lose to UNLV 27-0 etc. etc. etc.) We don't need them, unless it's to beat them and prove to local recruits that PAC-10 membership is meaningless.
The talent from the last 3-4 years of recruiting hasn't even begun to mature, while Utah has not had a great deal of recruiting success since Urban Meyer left and his last groups of recruits are gone or getting ready to graduate. If you think that Utah is going to go to the Pac 10 and do much more than .500 ball you're sorely mistaken (I'm dumbfounded by those posts; yes the Pac-10 is weak... but so is Utah... Whittingham has the abili to get his players up for 1-2 big games a year and play patsies the rest, (and lose to somer of those patsies) what does he do when every week is a challenge?). Pac-10 invitation alone doesnt' guarantee wins, talent does and they just don't have a ton of talent in their system.
Tom Holmoe doesn't need to do much, he can lobby the Big 12 a bit and just fill them in on what we offer, but what he really needs is for public opinion in Big 12 country to drive us there. The only way that happens, is if we win and win a lot. He can support the current staff and give them the resources they need to succeed. He's done that. He can put us in spotlight games that get us national respect. He's done that.
BYU just needs to stay the course and good things will happen. Barring a defection of our current talent, we're in good shape to shake up college sports the next few years; with or without Utah. I believe in the talent we've brought in, in fact if there was no bias in recruiting rakings, I'd put us in the top 5-6 for the 2010 class. (Just wait til they get a load of Bronson Kaufusi after his mission; whatever position he plays, I'm willing to bet he goes down as one of the top 2-3 players ever to play at the Y. And he's just one of many)
Winning solves a lot of problems and the Cougs are going to do a lot of winning in the future. Tom Holmoe is doing fine.
