BYU's New Main Rival

Will Utah to the PAC-10 change our rival?

Will BYU and the U continue to play each other every year? If not, the rivalry will take a huge hit.

I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a girl who knows a guy. The new rival will be.....UVU!!!

The rival is every other team in the conference.

Utah is it. Too much history and tradition for it to be anyone else. Rivalries are not manufactured, they happen over time. It is Utah or no rival at all. Ad the same goes for Utah. It is BYU or no one. Only team in the PAC-12 they have a chance to get a rivalry with is Colorado and there is no history there prior to 1950. They need BYU as much as we need them.

Wow, how could it be anybody besides the Frutes? They are hands down the only real rival that we have and the rivalry will continue regardless of conference affiliation because of the history and the geography.

I said Utah... One of those guys today I think it was Utah's president say something about there being some "short-term" issues with maybe scheduling the rivalry, which I think would actually be good if we happened to take the the 2011 season off for this rivalry because we'll still be in the mtn. west and it could push it back a year so we're not still playing TCU and Utah at their place in the same year, thus giving a little balance and I kind of like that idea. At least this is just me assuming that hopefully they'll just be an issue for one year, and one year only. Which means if that we're to happen that we'd need to make sure and beat them this year so we don't have to take their crap for 2 whole years!



This is also assuming they don't try to pull some crap where they want more games at their place because they're too cool for us now or something...

The "short term" conflict is the fact that utah struggles to go above .500 for the first 3-5 years. There is NO way they schedule BYU (a better opponent) OOC with only 2-3 guaranteed wins on their schedule and 3 guaranteed losses. The only way they schedule us is if we cleanup the next few years and have a continuously higher ranking than them, thus pulling the majority of the in-state recruits our way. (Which we will). At the end of the day, it STILL sucks to be a Ute.

I voted for Boise for two reasons: geographic proximity (Idaho Mormons vs Utah Mormons -- don't think there's bad blood there?) and because Boise is good enough to beat BYU. Every team in the conference already considers BYU their conference rival, but only TCU, Utah (ex-Utah, that is) and BSU can regularly hope to defeat BYU. This makes for a good rivalry.

Utah needs BYU to even have a rivalry, so we will always be rivals. Utah has no history of a rivalry with any PAC10 team. Utah and Colorado have not been in the same conference since the 50's, so no way to even try to contrive that as a rivalry game, and every other PAC10 team has a geographic rival--or 2--already. Utah will have bupkus, so they need that BYU game for the fans to have that emotional tie-in. Just like BYU fans will need it. Sorry, but TCU and BSU have nowhere near the history we have with Utah and will never be rivals. they may always be a big game in football, but not rivals. When BYU plays Utah, BYU fans want to win. And it does not matter what sport it is. Baseball, women's soccer, whatever. Can not say that with any other school. The rivalry game will always be the U game, at least for the next 20 years, anyway.

I'm not sure I understand why everyone thinks rivals need to be in the same conference to have a rivalry. Being from Kentucky the big rival here has always been UL and UK and this is a very fierce heated rivalry with UL in the Big Least and UK in the SEC. If you live in KY you have to affiliate with one or the other, you're either blue or red. Even though I'm not real big on either I just couldn't see myself in red so it was easy for me.

It's too bad Florida and Florida St. aren't in the same conference. Otherwise they could be great rivals and play each other at the end of each season. Oh wait....

I work with a guy who is a UMiami law grad, and back in the 90's Spurrier dropped the Florida-Miami rivalry because Miami won too much. And they had been playing each other since the 50's. If BYU wins too much, Utah will bail. Non-conference rivalries do not work if 1 teams dominates. If even, they do, though.

I don't know about that...there's always that "Rivalry" we have with Utah State that everyone says is so historical it can't be dropped.

Do me a favor and leave religion out of it... I already have one anti-mormon fanbase trolling up all my time on the hill. ;)

Well, to be honest, the most disparaging comments I get for being a BYU grad have been from Utah grads and non-Utah Mormons. It's like Shi'a vs Sunni sometimes.
