The future for BYU

C'mon, let's be honest, Utah's departure to the Pac-10 sucks... A great win for them and a terrible day for the Moutain West Conference...



So, with that, what's going to happen? Are we going to accept the underdog role, fall behind in recruiting and let the Utes compete in the BCS right in front of our eyes?



And let's face it, with the addition of Bosie State, the Utes have been replaced by a better opponent, making it tougher to compete in a conference that'll only get us to Vegas anyways... Its not the quality of BYU, TCU, BSU (and maybe Air Force) that'll get us an auto-bid, it's the likes of Colorado State, SDSU, UNLV, Wyoming that keep the MWC from EVER becoming a BCS conference.



So, why not go independent???

I think Wyoming is improving, as is CSU as is SDSU. It is UNM, UNLV that will really keep us down. Those schools will always be average at best. CSU and Wyoming at least have won MWC and WAC titles in their past, as has SDSU. I think the Aztecs finally have a coach to help them win, and a good QB to as well.



But I still want out of the MWC. Big 12 or bust.

BYU fans who clamor to go independent grossly overestimate BYU's following. To go independent, you need to have enough fans shelling out money to support you. BYU (a) doesn't have enough fans, and (b) the fans we do have, as Lavell said, go to games with the Ten Commandments and a twenty and don't break either.



BYU has good support in the intermountain west--Utah, Idaho, Nevada, but then it starts to break down. You need enough money-spending fans to merit a TV network signing a national broadcast deal...not many Mormons west of the Rockies, and the farther away they live, the less likely to give a darn about BYU sports. We have about 16 or so BYU alums here in our ward in Texas, and only one has paid out $ to get the MTN--me. Everyone else will road trip every other year to the TCU game, but that's it--it's an "event-based" fanhood, which doesn't translate into big-bucks.



If BYU had the support and money-numbers to make independent status work, we'd also have the support and money-numbers to make us much more attractive to the BigXII or PAC10. I know it's hard to see from Utah, but while BYU does have a national following that travels well, it doesn't translate into eyes on the TV set.

Yep. Good points. BYU has not outgrown the MWC yet. They do not dominate the conference - year in - year out. TCU & the U play us hard & if we get the "W" - it feels good - because it's an uncertain / tough battle! With Boise St. coming on-board - get ready for some more tough games. For now, the MWC is just fine.

The Deseret News (I think, I've read so much about this expansion topic lately) reported that a former BYU AD (Tuckett perhaps?) said that in the previous rounds of expansion BYU looked at independence and that it was not viable. Not even close. I'll look for the article.
