BYU pulls scholarship offer

I"d really like to hear BYU's side of the story. From the recruit's perspective, BYU randomly pulled his scholarship because they over-recruited RBs.



That doesn't sound like BYU recruiting to me. I'd hate to see us lose connections to Timpview over this.



Anyone know anything more about the Bryce McKenzie story?

The kid has had an offer for sometime and wasn't willing to pull the trigger. BYU has limited scholarships and little need for running back since we're going to get Harvery Langi.



McKenzie had his offer for more than a year and the coaches have asked him to make a decision in the past. He picked a bad year to shop around.



Is there a chance that the BYU coaches are also looking at Stanley Havili (though Havili would only be on next season's count since he's a senior) or other USC players and are desperate for scholarships?? who knows, it's not impossible (Tupuo has multiple years left)



This isn't the 1st player they've stopped pursuing, they cut ties with Tigi Hill and I think that soon Olumua, Mathews, Meredith and others are going to lose their offers if they don't make a commitment soon.



What I think is funny is that the father made a comment like "recruits will have to think twice when BYU recruits them."



truth is, the only thing they need to think twice abut is how bad thy want to be at BYU, because we're not going to be held hostage like we were with Jamora, Schwenke, Teo and Ngata there are other great players that want to be at BYU and no one is going to spurn us on signing day again, especially in a year where we're short on scholarships and USC players just became fair game 8)





all this really tells me is that Harvey Langi is coming to BYU and that McKenzie had plenty of time to add his name to the list when that wasn't a given.

I think this is also in response to McKenzies out of state visits and talks with other schools. Bronco has been quite firm with many recruits, about the fact that he wants people that want to be at BYU.

I hope BYU learns to not commit early to local kids either, unless they are really special. This goes both ways. From what I read, they told him if he commits this week, the offer is still good, bit otherwise, it is gone.

Is this your assumption on Langi, or do you know something I don't?

I have to say I'm going to take this with a good dose of skepticism. The story runs completely counter to BYU's recruiting M.O., which is to have the kids commit early and firmly or to move on. I also don't buy BYU promising to hold a scholarship for this kid indefinitely when BYU has refused in the past to give the same consideration to other, far more talented kids who play positions we needed much more than we need an umpteenth RB. Did he really think BYU was going to hold an offer for him while he went tripping after BYU took away Manti Teo's offer for continued tripping? It adds up to about the same sum as Kessman's story.



The kicker is this line though: "He was told if he committed to BYU this week, his scholarship offer would be reinstated." So, while the Dad is selling this as if BYU yanked the offer without warning, that's completely false. BYU gave the kid an ultimatum--let us know in a week, or it's over. Be glad for the week son.



I'll wait until February to hear BYU's story, but until then, all we have is one side of the story from a bitter dad who knows BYU is prohibited from talking about the issue until NLI day in February.

yeah, that's kind of what I read too.



Was McKenzie an early commit that byu offered in like 4th grade and he never accepted? and why would someone say decide this week and then yank it?



obviously, no one's going to like losing a scholarship offer, and the family is not hesitant about dragging BYU under the bus, but still.

craig, I, too, wish to know if you have some info more than just a hunch that Langi is BYU bound. I finally saw his youtube clip this week and was greatly impressed with the kid. He truly is a man among boys out on the football field. The two running backs he reminds of the most are Adrian Peterson and Marshal Faulk. He's big, strong, runs upright and has separation speed.



Also, isn't McKenzie a legacy recruit? His dad played for BYU right? Or am I confusing him with a different McKenzie.

The one offer he wants most is an offer from Utah.

In previous articles, McKenzie has expressed a lot of interest in BYU. His good friend Anthony Heimuli signed with BYU two years ago, and McKenzie admitted that playing with his good friend is still a draw.



“I love Anthony and he bugs me about liking Utah, but we’ll see,” McKenzie said. “I still like BYU. I just really want to play for Utah and I hope they offer here soon.”

Duh, gee... I just don't get why they would be pulling my offer.



I'm sure I'd be pissed too if I had been sitting on a BYU offer for over a year and was stupid enough not to accept it but I'd have no one else to blame but myself. All these other "interested" schools don't seem to be producing an offer and now he's pissed at BYU? After comments like that?!!



Sorry kid (and kid's dad), next time don't be so ignorant to think that you can say those kinds of things without some kind of repercussion, especially when BYU is this close to landing Harvey Langi, who is one hell of a lot better RB than you and in demand all over the country. Sorry, you just ain't good enough for BYU to take that kind of crap on the chin.

If there is a position BYU can cut loose, it is RB. Question is, can the kid play safety instead? If so, might still be worth the offer with decent speed and size to play that position. But if he is a vocal Ute lover during the recruiting process, cutting him loose is his own fault. It is clear that BYU is Plan B to him, and BYU is really short on schollies this year, with greater needs at other positions. He got an extra week, so he can take it or leave it. I am sure he called his Utah contact teh second he got this news as well to see what his chances were. I say cut him loose now.

It amazed me to see that a couple of the posters claimed to be BYU alums, then made rediculous assertions about BYU's lack of integrity. I think that they missed the whole platform for the common sense train.

Yeah I didn't get the purpose of that story either. BYU offered that kid a scholorship and had he accepted that offer, it would have been good even if the kid injured himself. he chose not to accept that offer and now he's mad that they are going to pull it. Had he wanted to go to BYU he would have accepted the offer. Apparatnly he doesn't want to come here, so why the indegnation?

Some folks have an oversized view of themselves. Is this kid good? Yes. Is he the GREATEST ever? No. Unfortunately for him - he was so comfortable keeping the BYU Coaches on a "string" - he thought he could continue to "shop & trip" - looking for a better deal. The BYU Football program is not a second rate "booby" prize!!! Bronco grew tired of the games. I'm glad they pulled the scholie!! This kid will probably end up carrying water for the Wyoming practice squad!! LOL!!!! Ya snooze ya lose!!
