Not sure Lane Kiffin can keep his nose clean long enough to keep USC out of a death penalty. The NCAA came down pretty hard. They're on hard core probation now.

My favorite part:

During a telephone conversation in late 2004, student-athlete 1 informed agency partner A that he (student-athlete 1) was embarrassed to drive his current vehicle, a pick-up truck, and wanted a different vehicle. Agency partner A agreed to provide the cash to purchase a vehicle. A short while later, in December 2004, student-athlete 1 located a vehicle he wanted, and agency partner A gave student-athlete 1's stepfather several thousand dollars in cash for a down payment on the vehicle. Student-athlete 1 later contacted agency partner A to request additional money needed to purchase wheel rims for the vehicle. Agency partner A then drove from San Diego to Los Angeles and gave student- athlete 1 an additional several thousand dollars in cash.

USC essentially goes down the tubes for rims. I hope they were freakin' sweet.

i guess he could have sold his soul for a pot of mash. This is at least a step up.

To summarize it, does you a disservice if you dont' bother to read it. If you care about college football, then you should check it out.

Okay okay you convinced me. It brought back memories of my grade school teachers telling me the importance of what they were teaching me but you convinced me. ;)



It actually was a shorter read then I expected and it had a lot of info about the NCAA that I didn't even know about. It made me hate USC even more then I already did. I heard Pete Caroll say that he was "shocked" to hear about the punishment. Yeah right Petey boy, funny how you bailed 6 months before the $hiat hit the fan.

What sucks is that none of the players and/or the coaches (well, I guess that Kiffin WAS an assistant then) were on that team - which is the problem with NCAA probationary enforcements.



When something like this happens (post-season ban), they should give ALL players a 30-day window to transfer to another school without having to sit out a year.



That way you're punishing the school and he boosters, but not the current players who had nothing to do with it.



Of course...does anyone really believe that no current USC players have been or were receiving similar benefits?

This is about $$$ and how much it costs USC; the Trojans could care less what it does to their current players, as much as they care about what it does to their brand... and that brand is tarnished.

What it does, is force schools like USC to keep their noses clean (fresno state hoops hasn't recovered, etc.) If they ran afoul of the NCAA again, they could risk a death penalty (Lane Kiffin is the type that might attempt to ride that fence) ... some programs fall completely apart when they're asked to do it.



I think the penalty is perfect and I don't feel bad for a single kid on their team, If you pick the glitzy school, you get what you paid for.



The one person that needs to pay the piper that won't is Pete Caroll. I wish the NCAA would give him a 20 year ban on college coaching. and I wish that they would make that a habit. Trust me if the coaches thought that those kinds of misdeeds would cost them their careers, they'd make sure that they didn't happen. Put that in play and college footbal gets much cleaner.

Mike Garrett will not survive this, Todd McNair will not survive this and there will be other USC coaches that get out soon. 2 years is an eternity and USC''s balls have been snipped.

Unfortunately, no. That game occurred on Sept. 18, 2004, which is before the window in which they forfeit wins. The window starts in December 2004 and ends after Reggie Bush's eligibility was up after the January 4, 2006, Rose Bowl.

Accounts I have read of the report said that Pete Carroll is not mentioned in the report anywhere, so that is why no personal sanctions against him. So he is free to return to the NCAA anytime he wants.

I agree with you here, there needed to be some kind of coaching ban for Slick Pete but he gets away with it. I am still surprised that Mike Garrett still has his job seeing all of this happened on his watch. I guess the thing that still irritates me is how USC still feels they shouldn't be held accountable for any of this and are going through with the appeal. Granted that may only be a formality on their part to appease their boosters and supporters, but in addition to that they are really putting on the aires of we shouldn't be punished for any of this.

At some point, in order for these coaches and ADs to start taking this seriously, something has got to stick to them. Half the time when a school gets slapped with sanctions they just bolt (or just before they get slapped with sanctions a la slippery pete). I think they should make a rule that they can't coach for 3-5 years if they get caught cheating. Go after their livelihood.
