WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--The Pacific-10 Conference announced today that the University of Colorado at Boulder has accepted an invitation to join the Conference as its 11th member, the first new member since July 1, 1978.

"This is an historic moment for the Conference, as the Pac-10 is poised for tremendous growth. The University of Colorado is a great fit for the Conference both academically and athletically and we are incredibly excited to welcome Colorado to the Pac-10," said Commissioner Larry Scott.

"On behalf of The University of Colorado students, faculty, alumni and fans, we are proud to accept this invitation from the Pac-10 and join the most prestigious academic and athletic conference in the nation, " said Philip P. DiStefano, chancellor of CU-Boulder.

"The University of Colorado is a perfect match - academically and athletically - with the Pac-10," said University of Colorado President Bruce D. Benson, "our achievements and aspirations match those of the universities in the conference and we look forward to a productive relationship."

Commissioner Scott, Chancellor DiStefano, President Benson, CU Board of Regents Chairman Steve Bosely and CU Athletics Director Mike Bohn and others will hold an official press conference on Friday, June 11, 2010 at 11 a.m. MT at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colo.

A mediocre choice by a "has-been" conference. Priceless!!!!

Not to mention that Colorado just lost scholarships for having the worst APR academic score in football and hoops in D1. So much for student -athlete in the Pac 10.

I think this was a WAY shrewd move on the part of the PAC10. Colorado AD may have some issues with student athletes, but the university itself is top notch. It blows over in no time. Plus, Colorado got added for the Denver market, not because they are contenders right now. They aren't, and those lost scholarships change nothing.

The genius here is that the PAC1.0 just pre-empted any moves by the state of Texas to try to leverage a position for Baylor. They basically just decided that they were taking who they wanted and would not be beholden to any legislature. It also means that Baylor will not get an invite no matter what. So as it stands, the PAC 10 will now add Texas, A&M, TTech, OU and OSU. And if those 5 say no thanks, Utah is Plan B. Smart move, I'd say. And I would almost bet that the move had the blessing of Texas, A&M and TTech, because it now takes pressure off them to make it a 4 team package deal as well. Now they can cut ties with Baylor much easier. It also means the PAC10 will not align itself with a religious school, like Baylor, over BYU, so it makes me feel a tiny bit better. Plus, I think this is good for the MWC, and here is why:

The MWC needs to now make a play for Baylor, and add them as a travel partner with TCU. Go after both Kansas schools. Add Boise State. And add Missouri, if you can get them. Say goodbye to Iowa State. Too far, they add little. That brings in 5 new teams, you go to a 14 team conference, with 7 in each division, and we are a top notch football conference, and an awesome hoops conference as well . We could not be ignored. Align it as follows:

Plains Division:

Kansas

KState

Missouri

TCU

Baylor

UNM

AFA

Mountain division:

BYU

Utah

Boise State

UNLV

SDSU

Wyoming

CSU

Good balance for both sports. Win-win for the MWC. But Missouri is the key. They may not want in, or may still be part of the Big 10 going to 16. Tell will tell. I think the Nebraska add by the Big 10 was used as leverage by the Big 10 to make Notre dame decide faster. I expect Notre Dame to join now and to see Missoouri to the Big 10 as well, along with 2 other schools. So the MWC may need an option to replace Missou. Perhaps only then take ISU.

Still waiting for the other shoe to drop ...

But I'm glad the waiting game is almost over.

The idea was to get CU all along to join the Pac 10. If the other schools can come along now if they like, if not, then the Pac 10 goes to its second option, and invites Utah to join CU, which is what outlets have been reporting all along. This was a way for the PAC 10 to put a strangle hold on Texas lawmakers trying to butt into this. If they, the lawmakers, want to put up a fight, then the Pac 10 simply withdraws its invite to the remaining five schools (or simply the 3 Texas schools) and invites Utah instead. If that's the case, then the lawmakers look like fools for ruining Texas', A&M's, and Tech's chance to join the Pac 10, all because of Baylor. This would be an unpopular move in Texas, and the PAC 10 knows this. Very smart and strategic move by the Pac 10.

I mentioned this in another thread, but can't the Texas lawmakers still prevent the Texas schools from moving to the Pac 10 without Baylor? If the Texas legislature wants to keep the Texas schools out of the Pac 10, then they have the power to stand in the way. Nothing is ever a done deal, so if Texas moving to the Pac 10 is really contingent on Baylor coming along, then the Pac 10 might either have to uninvite CU (or OSU, which might cause problems in with OU) or settle for Utah with the Big 12 remaining intact. It just depends on how bad the Pac 10 really wants Texas and OU.

So it begins...

I hope this means that the other 5 Big-12 teams don't join the PAC because they won't go without Baylor. Then the Big-12 invites BYU and Air Force to fill the void left by Nebraska and Colorado.

I also hope BYU's invite to the Big-12 comes before Utah's to the PAC because I won't be able to stand hearing all the Yewt losers trying to rub it in that they're in a BCS conference and BYU is not. Even though everyone knows that the only reason, again, THE ONLY REASON the PAC chose Utah over BYU is because of religious reasons.

**Also on ESPN there is a web poll and 57% of America think the new PAC with Texas and all them deserve 2 BCS bowl bids. That makes me sick. If that happens and the MWC is still left out of the BCS even though there are only 5 conferences then that will seriously turn me off to college football. It'll be like the NBA is for me now. I watch the Jazz and nothing else.

Yes Colorado just got hit with NEW sanctions, but lets not forget that this is hardly the first time. It was just a few years ago there were dismissals and rape allegations for the football team. Without having done background research on them, my impresion of Colorado is closer to a team of thugs than a "premier student-athlete" school.

The Pac $10 has flushed their pompous attitude and lofty academic standards down the toilet and the only thing they could say that would not shout hypocrisy is "we're making a money grab".

Not sure why Baylor is getting all of this love, to be honest. The Big 12 had ZERO problem leaving TCU, SMU, Houston and Rice in the dust when the SWC disbanded and the Big 12 added those 4 Texas schools. Baylor got saved by a governor, but things have changed, and UTexas really holds all the cards now. Baylor will not get an invite, unless Ok State gets dumped. Personally, I'd love that option because I;d rather take OkState over Baylor in the MWC, but I just do not see it.

By the way, the move the PAC10 made to add Colorado and out flank the Baylor backers reminds me of the move the Big 10 made to grab Nebraska, and to basically flank Notre Dame. I expect Notre Dame to join the Big 10 really soon now, and for them to go to 16 as well. The Big East will be the next to go down. It may survive as a hoops conference, but its football days are done.

Of course they can. But what it'll come down to is whether the legislators think that preventing the other three from bolting for the Pac-10 would seriously hurt them financially, in which case... better one gets left out than four.

I really don't understand all this talk about how the "Big XII can't survive without Nebraska". I understand the implications of a mass exodus once that first domino falls but most people are spouting off that statement as fact without mentioning the IF part of it as if it's a guarantee. Nothing is definitive yet. Notre Dame could decide at the last minute to pull the reigns in on this runaway carriage. "It's going to happen, unless something crazy happens in the final hours," the source said [regarding Nebraska]. "I think by this weekend, it's going to be wrapped up." You better believe ND still has a say in all this.

People act like A&M is just some lap dog to Texas. They in and of themselves are a prize any conference would be willing to add. They haven't had the most on-field success as of late, but they are still more valuable than Nebraska and on par with OU. In Texas, UT is 1 and A&M is 1a. If Texas decides not to go, the rest of the Big XII South stays put. And if that happens, the rest of the Big XII North could jump ship if they wanted and it wouldn't matter, the Big XII would still survive. They could easily replace them with a bunch of non-AQs and a few transplants from the Big East and have just as strong a conference with just as much fan support and market share.

The talk about the Big 12 not surviving without Nebraska is smokescreen. Of course they can, but Texas and OU want to align with the PAC10, so they are using it to be able to end the Big 12. Nebraska leaving is step 1. Colorado going to the PAc10 is step 2. The other 5 schools going to teh PAC 10 is step 3. Notre Dame joing the Big 10 is step 4. The Big 10 adding Missouri and 1 other is step 5. The SEC going afte r4 schools is step 6. The ACC raiding the Big East is step 7. The MWC adding the Big 12 leftovers, BSU and getting to 14 fits in there as well. who the 5th is is hopefully Missouri, but doubtful. This is all orchestrated, even though we don;t know it, and Comm. Delany along with Comm Scott ar ethe puppetmasters.
