What does conference re-alignment do to BYU hoops?

No one is talking about what the conference re-alignments will do to BYU basketball. Here's your chance to get out of the football thread for a minute. :D



I don't see us moving to the Pac-0. (we might have to call it Pac 0.5 if Utah goes...)

So Mountain West stays nearly intact possibly adding KU and KSU

or BYU accepts an invite to a new version of the Big 12.



It's not like BYU has had weak basketball, but we've hardly been powerhouses. Take away one Jimmer Fredette and BYU probably doesn't break top 25 next year. Part of that has to do with playing truly top 10 competition. Big 12 competition for example. I think playing KU and KSU every year might just push us to or keep us at the next level.



Not only in Basketball recruiting, but just by giving our Jimmer-type players exposure to more NBA calibre talent and perhaps forcing Rose's hand on dramatically improving big-man play just to be competitive.



It may be difficult to keep the new MWC together with KU and KSU looking at their new brethern as a significant demotion as well as a killer travel schedule (SDSU game will NOT be fun for kansas teams during finals weeks) much like Nebraska loathes Texas and has been looking for a way out.



What else?

Probably doesn't do much next year, since we wouldn't compete in the "new" league until the year after Jimmer's gone. But adding a KU or KSU certainly changes the power in the conference. Although I wonder how long KSU could keep it up if they were not a BCS team anymore.

There is potential that the mtn could have first rights to Kansas basketball...that blows my mind

The Mtn could be a real hinderance to get the k schools. If those schools join the conference, their tournament shares would flow to our conference bring in more money. I think there is a 4 year rolling average and each game played was worth $400,000.



I think Hair would need to protray this as a merger of conferences instead of them taking a step down to join our league. That might increase the chances of pulling it off.

Let me 1st say, Kansas and Missouri DO NOT WANT TO GO TO THE MWC, THEY SEE IT AS AN INFERIOR CONFERENCE AND ARE DOING EVERYTHINGTHAT THEY CAN RIGHT NOW TO AVOID IT. I don't expect them to join the MWC and I dont' think their fans will be happy at all. That being said, I sure hope it happens.





There are no negatives... several positives



Kansas and Missouri bring multibillion dollar alumns and donors (the walmart heirs, etc. ) and they do not care about football. They will expect high class, high $$ television coverage or they will make it happen. Think of Duke hoops fans of programs that actually can compete in football too. The Mtn will have no choice but to put up or leave; however the $$ will be there to imrove the Mtn because it'll have to be a fixture in Kansas and Kansas City.



We automatically become the 5th best basketball conference in the country behind the Big East, Big 10, ACC and SEC (this is up to debate too) and arguably better than the Pac 16 (though without Texas, I'd say we'd be better than the Pac 15)



We have a unique recruiting base that no one else has a grasp on; if you add a Kansas /Missouri/ Kstate, it only improves our profile and allows us to recruit a few more athletic players that we'd need to compete with MU and KU consistently (no one consistently plays with KU though).



It allows us to keep Dave Rose for life; improving the conference in hoops like that essentially guarantees that he doesn't need to look anywhere else.



We win our games at home, no matter who we play, so we get some top 20 rpi teams in the Marriot Center every year that have no choice whether or not to come to town. (that's huge)



We get tested by a few more top teams on the road each year. win or lose, playing Kansas and Missouri only gets us ready for the NCAAs.



If it's just Boise State, nothing changes. Consider it like having 2 Wyomings in the conference.

The two games with BSU would replace our 300+ rpi games already on the schedule so our rpi would tick up a little. BSU should be ablle to improve their team some with the new conference so that should improve it too.
