Most Surprising Sports Moments?

This PAC-16 thing has taken me totally by surprise. Which reminds me of all the other times I've been dead wrong about sports. Here are some:



2009- BYU 14, Oklahoma 13

2008- BYU 59, UCLA 0

Blow-out bowl wins over Oregon and Oregon State

Ugly losses to Stanford, Tulsa, and Florida State

Opening losses to Boston College and Arizona

Bowl loss to Arizona

Losing at home to UNLV (2004)

SDSU 31, BYU 10

Getting killed at home by Boise (who?), and then almost beating them on the road

Shut-out to Utah, overtime loss to Utah (Ratliff?)

Overtime loss to new Froggies, Big road win at ranked TCU, recent decimations by TCU

Beating Air Force so easily all the time, beating Wyoming so badly all of the time



Boise State over TCU (but not over Oklahoma)

Shocking Utah wins over UCLA, TCU, and Alabama

West Virginia over Georgia

UNLV 27, Utah 0

UNLV and New Mexico over Arizona State and Arizona



What are some of the most surprising sports moments for you?

I left the 1980 Holiday Bowl with about 5 minutes left and BYU 20 down, didn't find out till the next morning that I'd walked out on the greatest comeback in Cougar history...

Wyoming over Tennessee - in Knoxville

App st. over Michigan in the Big House

Stanford (40+ point dog) over USC in LA.

Butler to the Championship game in March.

How quiet the Staples Center normally is. What, are LA fans too cool to cheer unless its the finals?

Utah State is still a D-1 football school.

Incidentally also the last game road game Lavell used the home team's communication equipment between the booth and the sidelines.

Also the 1985 BYU team was the only team to give one team their only win, UTEP (1-10) only beat BYU and another team their only loss, Air Force was 11-1.

We had a HB game party at my home in Bartlesville, OK (yes, I do know hartsocks). Several guys got up and left with 5 to go. I called all of them right after the game (can't understand why their wives don't like me). :whistle: :roll: :lol:

The Crowton era died when against Mississippi St, Crowton didn't take a timeout on the play before Staley broke his leg. Staley was clearly gassed and needed a breather. He pretty much carried the team down to FG range. Staley had 28 carries for 148 that day. If Crowton had taken a timeout maybe he doesn't break his leg. I almost want to think we had two left, so we still could have used one to stop the clock.



Anyway, I still fully believe that we beat Hawaii if Staley plays. We still scored 45 points. And that was with our backup QB and backup RBs. We lost by 27 points. You can't tell me Staley wouldn't have been good for at least four TDs that day. 4x7=28 and we win. We also fumbled 9 times and lost 6 of them. You can't convince me Staley wouldn't have prevented at least four of them.



We would have finished 14-0 that year if Staley doesn't break his leg. I'll never be convinced otherwise.

Staley breaking his leg was extremely depressing, but that still doesn't help me feel any better with our D allowing 72 points. Ten wins into that season and everyone thought we would go undefeated. Staley breaking his leg was a total surprise, something I actually forgot to mention, too.

forgive me for talking nothing about nothing, but if there was ever a freak of nature that was a Cougar...it was Luke Staley. He was a train on two legs that could run, catch and destroy. If ever I thought a Cougar would use performance enhancers, it might have been him. And steriods are often attributed to significant injuries from which Staley never recovered. Just my trains of thought. Make whatever connections you will since I know nothing about nothing.
