StatsCougarI just finished watch the MWC news conference regarding expansion. Commissioner Thompson noted that models for expansion included not only 10, but also 12 and 16 teams. He also noted the 16 would only happen if all the major BCS conferences went to 16. This got me to thinking about expansion and the different possibilities of 12 team conferences. (I donât think college football will be stable with 16 team conferences, especially in the west. Too hard to travel, especially for non-revenue generating sports. Also bigger schools will not want to share money they could be making with schools that canât toe the line, i.e. Washington State.)
Here are four senerios, and the twelve teams the BYU will play with in the MWC. This mean we do not end up in the Big 12 or Pac 1.
Ten plus two:
Expansion talk dies; the Big 10 canât get ND, so it does not expand. Pac-10 realizes that unless they take BYU, no other expansion will work. MWC take Boise State, and later adds Nevada and UTEP. UTEP gives the conference more presences in Texas, and also unites another old WAC Member in the fold. Nevada gives us a decedent basketball school, and brings in UNLVâs natural rival. UTEP could be replaced with SMU, small travel cost for basketball, since both are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
Lose of Utah:
Same as above, except we take both UTEP and SMU. Expanding our presence in Texas will help recruiting. UTEP is New Mexicoâs travel partner, and the league looks pretty good.
Big 12 destruction:
No Boise State. Instead we add both Kansas Schools and Baylor/Colorado, depending on how things shake out. The Kansas schools give us great basketball schools, and they have decent football teams as well. Both could be on the rise. By taking Baylor, we a school to help with Texas recruit, give TCU a natural rival, and gain a school who has both good basketball and baseball teams. I think they are descent in several non-revenue generating sports as well. Colorado will help us penetrate the Denver market even further, and they school might final get its football team back on track. For many team in the conference, it could also be cheaper then going to Boise as well. Cheaper travel cost, helps with the expenses.
My Conference:
The three teams that I would like to see in the conference. (realistically, I mean I would love Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, but that isnât going to happen.) Utah State, UTEP, and SMU. I really donât see any added value in having Boise State in the MWC, so that is why Iâm leaving them out. The Texas schools add to our recruiting, and I think both have the leadership to get really their ships headed in the right direction. I think that if Utah State get into the MWC, the extra money would all them to rise, and probably become the fifth team in the conference behind BYU, TCU, Utah, and Air Force. While Iâve never been to USU, I think would should still look out for them.
