Top 10 BYU football games

"BYU has won one national championship, 23 conference championships, and 505 games since 1922. In the process of achieving these milestones, the BYU Cougars have had many individual games that stand out. While each win is reflected equally in the wins column, we all can agree that certain wins are more significant and meaningful than the others."

Lots of good ones to choose from, which one is it? Here's a hint. It is from a year that is an odd number.

While the 1984 season was a national championship season, it's hard to call a comeback win over a 6-5 team a national championship game. I think the game is fine where it is in the rankings.

Exactly. The list is top 10 GAMES. While the game gets some points for the NC, the caliber of Michigan that year and the comeback against that opponent hurt this game in the rankings.

You can increase the points on game 3. BYU was a heavy underdog in that game. The spread was at least a touchdown for KSU.



I'm not sure that I agree with you on the order of your top ten so far, but the games are definately top 10 worthy.



One game that should be in the top 10 is the BYU win over AF in 1985. That was AF's only loss that year. I wonder what would have happened had a WAC team won the NC two years in a row. Would the national perception have been changed?

Exactly--that win was huge. How many other BYU teams could finish the season with a bowl loss, 3 total losses (one to UTEP!) and still finish the season #16 in the nation.



I also nominate the 31-17 win over #14 Penn State for a top ten finish. After the ranking is finished, I'd like to see list of games considered but that didn't make the cut.

Agree to disagree on that one. I remember watching that game and knowing when it was over that BYU had won the national championship. When Bosco limped in and threw that game winning touchdown it was oh so verry sweet! I've not since then felt as excited about a BYU victory.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Michigan dealt with a horrible string of injuries in the middle of that season, but were mostly healthy for the bowl game against us. Early in that year, they beat the team ranked #1 in the nation, and they themselves were ranked #1 the next week. Don't judge them entirely on their later losses when things got bad for them.

I know that Michigan was down to its third string qb at season's end, but I am not sure about other injuries. They did beat #1 Miami in the season opener and jumped to #3 in the polls.

We finally made it to number one. If yesterday has you feeling bad, hopefully this helps ease the pain.



For those keeping score, three of the top 10 were against Big XII teams. (That probably means nothing, but I thought I would throw it out there.)
