Mars"With the Pac-10 Conference planning to discuss expansion later this month, San Diego State has indicated it wants to leave the [Mountain West] Conference. And a member of the Holiday Bowl board of directors is urging BYU to form an alliance with Colorado of the [Big XII] Conference and jointly petition the Pac-10 for admittance. What's more, the president of the University of Colorado says BYU's name has also come up in the [Big XII]'s discussions on expansion. The chain of events set in motion by... the Big Ten did not go unnoticed by Pac-10 Commissioner Thomas C. Hansen. Though the Pac-10 appears to be in good shape... the fact that "the SEC is looking to expand to a much larger group" has prompted Hansen to keep the conference's options open. San Diego State has officially applied for Pac-10 membership, but Hansen said the conference "is not looking at anyone right now," just addressing the expansion issue. Richard Circuit, a member of the Holiday Bowl board of directors and a BYU graduate, said there's a large groundswell of support among Cougar alumni in Southern California for BYU to leave the [MWC] and become part of the Pac-10. Circuit believes that BYU has basically outgrown the [MWC]. With rumors indicating the [Big XII] will be restructured to include some members of the [Mountain West] Conference and that Oklahoma and Nebraska may possibly go elsewhere, Circuit says a BYU-Colorado axis is a natural for the Pac-10."
