Lesson from the SWC: Disbanding a Conference

The SWC had 9 members in 1990, the year Arkansas announced they were leaving. In '91, Arkansas joined the SEC, leaving 8. In 1993, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Baylor left to join the Big 8, forming the Big 12. But the 4 remaining teams didn't expand, didn't add new members. They fled. The WAC, of course, took TCU, SMU, and Rice. Which left only Houston, who was picked up by C-USA. The conference was officially disbanded in May 1996, after the baseball championship game. They all began playing in their new homes in 1997.

My question is, if the Big XII gets robbed of 6-8 teams, will they really seek to fill back out, or will they simply seek new homes in the Big Ten, MWC, and C-USA before disbanding entirely?

Things are different now. Wit the BCS, there is incentive to keep the conference going at least 2 more years, and as Kansas, K-State, Nebraska, ISU were part of the Big 8, I see them trying to keep that going, no matter what.

According to Big XII rules, you have to wait two years and give up 50% of your conference income each year to leave. If 8 teams are leaving, could they vote to disband the conference, as to allow themselves to keep all their cash?

Okay, I've heard that the Big XII would need a 3/4 vote to change a bylaw, which is what it would take to dissolve the conference. That's 9 schools. I don't see that happening.



...Elsewhere now, I'm hearing that the subject of dissolving the conference isn't officially covered in the conference charter, and would thus only take a super-majority vote (7 of 12). That would happen!
