I hope this is true.....

As a college football fan, I find the SEC to be terribly overhyped, while western teams are often overlooked. As such, I have greatly enjoyed rooting for USC to demolish every east-coast team that has found their way onto the Trojans schedule over the past 10 years or so (USC 77, Arkansas 7 comes to mind).



That being said, I can't stand cheating by the "big boys" in college sports. It seems to be winked at so frequently, while the smaller schools get hammered much worse for lesser violations. So this time around, I hope that USC is made an example of!



1- I hope that both the basketball and the football programs are found guilty.

2- I hope that the violations are declared Major Violations, as both sports reportedly paid cash and other incentives to help them recruit top players.

3- I hope that the University is found to lack Institutional Control, as these things tend to happen frequently across multiple sports.

4- I hope that USC is declared a Repeat Violator by the NCAA, as they were sanctioned for cheating in 2001, only 2 years before the Bush scandal begining in 2003 and lasting through 2005, and followed shortly by the Mayo saga in 07-08. Not to mention the extreme stupidity of the Kiffin hire in 2009!



No punishment can be too much in my opinion right now. The fact that these investigations have lasted years and years has me out for blood! Cut 20 scholarships in football and 3 in basketball, ban them from the post-season for 4 years, take away their national championships and Heisman trophies, bar them from being shown on television! I really don't think the NCAA can go too far in this instance...

I'm with you, which is painful since I've been a Trojan fan since growing up in LA in the 60's. The length of time spent on the investigation suggests the NCAA is doing all it can to avoid major penalties, messing with a major program. Vacating a national championship? Vacating a Heisman trophy? Big deal indeed!

Remember that in the 80's SMU was one of the big boys. The NCAA has come down hard before, and they might do it again, to distract people from the BCS mess they have. There will be some penalty, but I have a sinking feeling that it will not be as tough for the football team as we would like. As for the heismans being returned, those aren't given out by the NCAA, so I doubt that those are going to change hands. Bush will keep his.

The NCAA has come down hard on the big boys before, but not for a while. Last time, was Alabama, I believe. As you recall, they then hired Glenn Tuckett on an interim basis to clean up their program. Before that it was Florida, who was on probation for Spurrier's first couple of seasons. And SMU go the neutron bomb, which will never be used again.



I suspect that USC will lose some schollies in both sports, maybe get a year postseason ban in hoops, and then perhaps get probation. And not much else.
