BCS boss tells Congress to back off

In a letter posted Friday on the NCAA website, Hancock responded to questions posed by Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) in March.



In a five-page letter and six pages of attachments, Hancock noted that BCS participation is voluntary - apparently in response to the senators' statement that the BCS "apparently considers itself an 'arrangement''' in which there is a "lack of transparency.''



He cited the example of Utah, a Mountain West school that played in the Sugar Bowl following the 2008 season. Without the BCS, Hancock wrote, the Utes likely would have been sent to the less glamorous - and lucrative - Las Vegas Bowl.



And contrary to conventional wisdom, Hancock wrote, non-BCS conferences received a record $24 million from last year's BCS games.

Horrible argument. He's basically arguing that: IF participation in some activity is voluntary, THEN it is perfectly legal and ethical to restrict full access to it. A similar argument would be for farmers to get together and form a cartel, and then say "Eating is voluntary - so it's perfectly legal for us to only sell rotten produce to the East Coast." It may seem like a stretch, but money is the food of collegiate sports.

Obviously, his logic is flawed. Sure non-AQ teams have greater access. And yes, Utah did go to the Sugar Bowl and not the Vegas, but it was a one-time granted access. And yes, non-AQ schools did receive a record amount in BCS money. But again, it was a one-time grant. And they EARNED those rewards and benefits. They didn't have them bestowed simply because of their conference allegiance like the last ten poor Big East champions.

Ya, the BcS should be able to run the NCAA...err, uhh...
