After failed drug test, Matt Shaw gone from UNLV men’s basketball program

6-foot-8 forward - UNLV’s fourth-leading scorer last season - will finish out his undergraduate degree this summer



1- This was going to be his 5th year in Vegas. Him being gone will help BYU in their attempt to finally beat the Rebels away from Provo.

2- Good for UNLV! It's nice to see a quality coach like Lon Kruger stand up for the program's values.

3- I almost feel bad for the kid. He sure sounds disapointed in himself: “I tested positive for a NCAA banned substance and it will cost me my senior season,” Shaw said in a statement released by the UNLV athletic department. “I made a poor decision, but I take responsibility for it. I apologize to my teammates, my coaches and the fans. I am proud of the fact that I will earn my degree and am also proud of what we accomplished during my four seasons as part of the Runnin’ Rebel program. I hope the fans will remember me for what I tried to give to this program and accept my apology.”

4- This means that UNLV is thinking about offering Mike Loyd's little brother, who is supposedly better than he is, and also plays football. Crap.

Matt Shaw has to forsake his Senior season next year. What I found most interesting about the article, (other than "I KNEW IT") is that the university has no problem with him finishing his degree at UNLV. Different world that's for sure.

I felt bad for him too, but our rivalry with UNLV has become so vehement in the past few years that my emotional sentiment for his well-being slammed up a giant steel anti-UNLV wall of glee in their misery. Not quite the Christian love I was expecting.



I actually half-expected his statement to blame BYU somehow - maybe for giving him the banned substance (Postum or poppy-seed buns most likely) just because everything is about BYU these days.

To be fair, Harvey Unga was allowed to finish his finals this last semester at BYU as well, to get those grades/credits toward graduation.

Unga wasn't in violation of NCAA rules, and technically he is not in negative standing at BYU as he withdrew prior to any case being opened. I would assume he was in good standing when he took his finals and was not granted special favors to finish his finals.

NCAA rules affect very little, it appears, least of all your class schedule. Just look at Aaron Hernandez, the TE from Florida.
