Still a few rounds to go in the draft and Harvey is taking the back door into the NFL, but Utah had four guys go, tcu has two, even unlv had a gaurd go before pitta.and we only have one picked. what gives?

Is bronco doing more with less? Are we just excellent game planners and game callers? How can a team be in the top 25 for as much as these seniors have been and not get more drafted?

Utah has had 5 go.

In answer to your question, we've been doing more with less. BYU has yet to really start graduating Bronco recruits, so the players leaving have been those that remained after the cupboards were cleaned out with Crowton's departure. BYU is doing better and better recruiting, but with the unique aspect of the mission experience, most of them are just now starting to contribute.

It's going to be scary when we the talent starts rising to the level of the coaching.

I'm going to have to say no. BYU is plenty talented and at least as talented as Utah. Their biggest problem is lack of connections in the league from the coaching staff. I think only one has coached in the NFL, and that was before he was in the CFL.

For example: Jan Jorgensen>Koa Misi. Misi is a 2nd round pick this year. Utah is doing a better job of getting their players seen.

This staff has not shown the ability to get their players in the NFL. Even though Crowton had his faults, he got players to the next level. His worst year record wise still had 5 draft picks. Much of it was due to Crowton's contacts in the pros, and also, I think they did a much better job of getting good film to NFL teams than the current staff does.

For all the good things that Bronco and company have done, getting players to the next level has not been one of them. Once they do improve in this area, players that we have lost out on in the past (Teo, Martinez, etc.) will start coming to BYU because they will see that they can still get to the pros from there.

As a side note, had Clawson not had to give up football for health reasons, he probably would have been drafted as well.

The problem with this argument is this: Which BYU player didn't get drafted this year that really deserved to be drafted i.e. wasn't at best a round 6-7 guy? No matter how much film or what connections you have, no one is going to spend a 5th round or higher pick on the guys we put into the draft pool this year. 6/7/FA are all the same.

Tonga isn't a 5th round guy, neither is Hall, Jorgensen, George or Clawson. They are all guys who fit into an effort system at BYU, but who have big question marks as to their ability to transition to the next level.

I edited my post and did provide an example. Jorgensen is better than Misi. Misi was drafted fairly early (I said 2nd, it may have been 3rd round) and Jan may end up a FA acquisition. Misi may have been a reach, where he was taken, but there was enough information for someone to want him.

And its not just this year. BYU has had O-linemen recently who were better than Beadles, yet he's drafted.

Jorgensen was better in BYU's scheme than Misi was in Utah's scheme. But you are delirious if you really think Jorgensen would make a better NFL player than Misi. Jorgensen doesn't have the speed to play the end, the size to play tackle, or the lateral speed to play LB. Misi has all three, and he went to the NFL as an outside linebacker....a position Jorgensen could never dream of playing. Misi has been projected as a second round pick ever since the combine....Jorgensen hasn't gotten a sniff because the position he plays simply doesn't exist at the next level where the guy on the other side of the line will outweigh him by 50 pounds and be just as quick.

Look at how different the measurables are:

Size: Misi = 6'3" 251; Jan = 6'2" 256

40 yard dash: Misi = 4.75; Jan = 4.95

Vert jump: Misi = 38"; Jan = 34"

Broad jump: Misi = 10'3"; Jan = 8'4"

Add to the measurables the fact that Misi has been improving the last three years while Jan has declined since his super-soph year, and you see one player as an explosive player with upside, and another as a less than average physical specimen at the position who might be past his prime.

As for Beadles, I don't think BYU has had a lineman in at least four years as good as Beadles. Beadles was a first-team all-american this last year. When is the last time BYU sent a first-team all-american lineman into the draft? Yeah, I think he went a round or two too early, but that isn't the point.

Answer the question: which of BYU's undrafted players do you think was worth a 5th round draft choice? I don't see any of them as meriting that selection.

It's one thing to hate the Utes, it's another thing to let blue-goggles blind you to the talent level of individual players. You probably think Criddle was better than Weddle too.

The NFL just voted you wrong by a tune of 6-1.

As much as it hurts to have so little talent picked up by the NFL this year, it must hurt the frUtes even more to know they were beaten by what can be argued was a less talented team.

Give the Utes credit though for getting 6 guys in. There were VERY few schools who got half that many this year. That's a huge number. TCU only got two and they were by far the dominant power this past year.

TCU sent three. Newhouse was taken by the Pack in the 5th.

Ok, I was just referencing the Ute players because of the question that is the topic. I may hate the Utes, but not as much as many on here. And if you look at the statement in my original post, saying that the coaching staff is failing to get the players to the next level is far from blue-goggled fandom. In fact, it was a direct attack on the very successful coaching staff.

While Beadles may have been a 4 year starter, and a really good one, BYU has had lineman just as good that only had to play 2 or 3 years that(Reynolds, Feinga-although they did play even as freshmen) who never got a sniff of the draft.

Now, to go off of topic slightly, if the TE that was drafted out of Miami is a 3rd or 4th round talent, then Pitta is at least a 2nd round talent, and George is definitely a 3rd round guy. The Miami TE benefits from a few things: ACC, Antonio Gates success, and good film.

Is George a 3rd round guy? No. But he's as good or better than people who were drafted in that area at the same position. George is probably a late 4th early 5th round talent, and will have more success than Dan Coates has had in the NFL (I know, not saying much, but he's still playing) because he's almost as good of a blocker and a better receiver.

This is something we'll never know, but I wonder if Jorgensen would have been drafted had he stayed at Kentucky. My guess is that he probably would have, and probably fairly high.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but how does BYU's class look in next year's draft? I've heard that Reynolds is a likely 1st rounder and possible top 15. Unga a 3d-5th rounder if he is able to return for his Sr. season. Rich might surprise and go in the late rounds too.

Bronco was the DC for Crowton beginning in 2003 (if I remember correctly). As such, wasn't Bronco in charge of recruiting the defensive players back then or was Crowton fully hands on so that Bronco had to use the players Crowton brought in? Or were Bronco's hands tied by how poorly the team played?

I am surprised that Manase wasn't drafted given the recent success BYU has had with FBs. Yet, I am sure he'll get a chance as a FA because of such. And I agree about Jorgenson. He had a terrific Soph year, but has done nothing to improve on it.

Pitta got drafted, Hall, Tonga, and George were picked up by NFL teams, Unga would go in the supplemental draft, and Clawson would have a contract right now if he pursued it. 6 NFL players doesn't sound like a bad thing to me. But then again I don't really care much about the NFL.

Besides, say we did beat Utah while having worse talent than them. That's sounds like a GREAT thing to me! Bronco is clearly the man! And there's no doubting the high level of talent we have coming into the program right now...
