Earthquake in North Utah

Cache valley area had like a 4.5 or something like that. Radio this morning said it was the first quake since a 5.9 in St. George like 20 years ago.



Don't quakes cause more quakes? If you have a fault, say, like the Wasatch fault, that has been building tension for a million years and could go at any moment and cause "the big one" , doesn't a quake nearby kind of shake things up a bit and make it more likely?



anyone here know anyone in that area?

I'm no geologist, but what I remember from my geology classes is smaller quakes release tension. So if you have a lot of smaller quakes it would most likely (although not in all cases) decrease the possibility of a bigger quake.

I thought this was metaphorical and had to do with U of U moving to the Big Sky conference
