Fans give a pass for 3,4 or 5 losses?

Personally, hearing that our best prospect is a true freshman QB makes me feel uncomfortable about hoping for any of these outcomes:

* BCS invite

* conf championship

* 10-win season

* revenge on FSU

* rivalry win





Now worse things have happened. So even the prospect of an 8 or 9 win season does not bother me. That's still a bowl game against a beatable team in a western states venue I might enjoy traveling to.



But I am a pretty tolerant fan. I spent most of Crowton era defending a bad coach.



How do you think most Y fans react to 4 losses?

I'd be satisfied with a 9-4 season, disappointed with 8-5, and stoked about 10+ wins.



That's saying something though....replace more than half of your defense as well as your quarterback, and you still expect 9 wins--replace all of that and only expect a two game drop off.



Speaks volumes for what Bronco has done with the program.

If you asked Bronco what he expected, I'd think he say that he expected his team to compete in every game. And that is what I ask for. Losses do not matter as much this year, so long as this team really competes in every game they play. Having said that, if they compete in every game, I think they go 9-4 after the bowl game.

I would be disappointed if we lost to any of the following teams:



Air Force

Colorado State

Utah State

Nevada

New Mexico

San Diego State

Wyoming

UNLV



I won't like it but the season would not be a disappointment if we lose to these teams:



TCU

Florida State



We should be able to win one of these two games:



Utah

Washington



If we end up in the Poinsettia Bowl or lower then I would be disappointed if we didn't win the bowl game.



So the breakdown is 10-3 is a satisfying season for me. 11-2 I'm ecstatic. 9-4 I'm disappointed because we probably lost to Utah or a crappy bowl team. Anything below that and I will be on anti-depressants until spring ball starts in 2011.



There is no such thing as a rebuilding year in college football. Kids graduate every year. I still expect BYU to win every year.

I'll repeat what I said in another thread as far as my predictions for the season go



Worst case scenario: We go 1-4 in our 5 toughest games (Washington, FSU, TCU, Air Force, Utah) and 6-2 in all others to finish 7-6 (I said 8-5 in the other thread, but then I figured, worst case we'd lose our bowl game too, so 7-6)



Best case scenario: we go 3-2 in our 5 toughest games and 7-1 in the others, finishing 10-3 (I figure Washington, Air Force and Utah are the most winnable out of our hardest games. We're still far better than the bottom half of the MWC, but I can see us maybe dropping one just from inexperience, or maybe lose our bowl game.)

I'm part of the "compete in every game" crowd. I don't expect BYU to lose in games because since Bronco has taken over as head coach, they normally compete really hard in every game. The reason i thought 2008 was disapointing is because in some of the losses, they seemed to quit after getting behind, maybe it was a product of Max throwing the interceptions, I don't know. If BYU has 5 losses and competes hard in all of them and but happenes to come up short, I don't think i will feel like it was a bad year, it will give me hope that the team will be more experienced for next year. Having said that, Bronco is a good coach, and good coaches normally win close games. I don't expect BYU to have 5 losses, especially close losses, I expect them to pull out wins in most of the close games.

I'd accept 5 losses and be thrilled with anything more. Not because we're not capable of more, but because this is going to be a transition year (I said transition, not rebuilding) for us and it's entirely possible that a transition team might actually drop a winnable game or two; and I take no road game for granted. We've been spoiled the last 4 years and considering the future of this program; I'm willing to accept a tiny bump in the road.



The fact that Harvey Ungs is coming back is huge though and puts us in control of all games that we'd be favored in.



Where we're not favored; I would be quite happy to win one of those:

UW

@FSU

@TCU

@Utah

I expect us to stumble along the way in order to find our groove. If we lose any of our last five games I'll be pretty sad. :~(



I expect us to learn lots and be click on all cylinders after the TCU game. If the frUTES finished with a pretty decent year with their inexperienced QB's... Then we should have a decent year with our "better" inexperienced QB's. They just had a very good defense to help their offense.



Here's to hope our defense offsets our offense!!!

I reserve the right to change my prediction after fall camp, but as of now I think we win all but the TCU and FSU games, but this year, I think we'll be in those games right to the very end, maybe even pull one of them out. As for Puketah, I really believe that they have to replace more than we do this year and by November, whoever our starting QB is will be humming by then.



A team is equal to the sum of the parts. You can't make your predictions solely based on the high turnover that we have in starters this year.



The bottom line is this: On offense, our OL will be better, our RBs will be better, our WRs will be better than last year. True we have to replace a QB and TEs but with the gluttony of talent we have at each of those two positions, I'm confidant the cream will rise to the top and whoever winds up starting will be good enough to adequately fill in the shoes of Max and Dennis/Andrew.



On defense, we lose a lot more however, our DBs will be better and deeper than perhaps ever before in the history of the program. You can guarantee that we'll be putting more pressure on teams and not playing as conservative this year due to the depth and talent at DB/lack of experience in the front 7. But our defensive coaches have proven capable of replacing high-profile starters in the past with a lot less talent to work with.

With our loaded offense last year the Utes still took us into overtime. It doesn't seem to matter how good or bad we/they are, it's been a tough-as-nails game nearly this entire decade. I expect a similar game this year.



I also like our chances to beat FSU in Tallahassee (see BYU v OU 2009), partly because I'm going to be there to witness it.



I don't like our chances against TCU in any year recently. They have my respect for how well they play.



That said, I always expect the Cougars to win every game, and every time they lose I'm disappointed.
