How does Kahuku feel about BYU?

So Tigi Hill (a Kahuku kid considering BYU) is friends with some of the current BYU players. Recenty on his facebook, he made mention of his desire to "get off the rock" which we've heard many many times from those kids.

So I made a very short "BYU is calling your name" remark and a friend of his family (who's daughter ironically went to the Kahuku prom with Lone Peak and future BYU linebacker, Sae Tautu) made these remarks:

Bware the cougar in sheeps clothing... Don't do it Tigi- -- Trojans got yo back :) that's my vote

Ask all the premier local boys who played previous years and sat behind a balding 28 year old with 3 kids, grant it RM; but if you're not from Utah you don't play... And I'm not knockin the religion factor, cuz really? How many of those boys know their stats more than the scriptures and still set out for a mission? Props to the dedication which comes from the individual not the program. The last time BYU won the championship the local boys were the starters. Guess that's a "no brainer" too! Look to the north if you want proof in the pudding, Coach Whit has had unbelievable success because he keeps it real... Utes, chew on that

I'm really beginning to think that Kahuku holds BYU in contempt. They blame the failures of kids like Shiloah Teo on us. They think that Jray and Shiloah should have started ahead of Scotty Johnson, etc. etc. etc. (despite the fact that he was an uperclassman that had to earn his scholarship as a walk-on and helped BYU to 2 of their most successful seasons) and they hold a grudge as long as the Hatfields and McCoys; yet they don't seem to care one bit about the honor code, church standards the the consequences of not abiding by them.

We lost commitments of Haoli Jamora and Kona Schwenke and I have to believe it's because of people like this in their ears. In fact I have to believe that this is the predominant attitude out there right now.

If I were Bronco, I might be ready to write them off if they're going to act this entitled and hold these types of grudges. What Jamora and Schwenke did by leading on BYU the entire year was cost a couple good recruits that wanted to be at BYU, scholarships. Do they honestly think that if Jray Galei or Shiloah Teo were heads and tails better than Scott Johnson or Andrew Rich, that they wouldn't have played? And how could they possibly be upset if they knew that Rich and Johnson didnt' even have the promise of a scholarship when they came to BYU yet the Kahuku kids didn't have to pay a dime?

We don't have this trouble with most of the California polynesian players, we certainly don't have the same trouble when we recruit out of Texas, and guys like Travis Tuiloma stopped their recruiting (inspite of Kstate, Kansas, Oklahoma State, and others trying to jump in after) the day he got his scholarship offer and accepted. So what is it about Kahuku? What's the truth and why the hate?

And did this random mom just say what's on the tip of every Kahuku fans tongue?

I guess by "keeping it real" over at the U, the poster is referring to sub .500 seasons over the next 3 years. If they want to act like that then go to the U, and we'll kick your asses as a yewt. Rally the troops, Bronco!!! Them's fighting words!

and is "the Trojans got yo back" referring to USC?

Yeah Coach Carroll definitely has your back... oh wait!

Just ask kaveinga how that worked out for him.

I'm confused... Did anyone recent like BYU fans/players or the coaching staff preach not to starting Jray last season???

Maybe BYU should ease up with recruiting at Kahuku high for a couple years to ease the grudges that some people may have.

I thought Robert Anae has a brother who coaches their football team? Any truth to that???

It's tough to ignore good or great talent if they have it... Especially if we have solid connections.

Wow! I'm stunned reading the comments by the local Kahuku resident. It's eye opening how biased and twisted it is!!!! I hope this is a "passing" thing. Whatever it is - I'm certain Bronco & Anae have their finger on the pulse & are fully aware of it.

It turns my stomach reading that twisted bilge!! Got to do some damage control @ the grass roots level. Who knows how it got started!!!

there's more, she went on (I really regretted making the comment, but I learned so much about how the average Kahuku resident feels about BYU; particularly since they're all related, one way or another)

Only a BYU alumni would have such a narrow minded view of themselves and the world. Someone that's tryin to toot their own horn all the time is always tryin to prove something. AND until Bronco can win multiple National titles... He's just a football coach that we do not quote from. Not a prophet, not a General Authority, not a bishop--- just a coach

Hmmmmm ...... bias?? Resentment?? Stored up animosity??? What's that all about????? I'm in the dark here!!

Sadly this is the kind of thing I've started to see more and more frequently. It seems to be a some form non-conformist tendency that skews the judgement of a lot of mormons.

It comes in a number of different flavors ranging from the salt lake county brand "I want my kid have a diverse educational experience at the ewe or westminster outside the bubble of utah county" to the logan brand "utah state is better than either byu or utah" to the east coast brand "it's a shame she chose BYU when she had a scholarship offer from MIT" (all direct quotes from actual conversations I've had with active albeit slightly ashamed/resentful mormons). At the end of the day people can't seem to admit to themselves that they don't want to be like all the other mormons who send their kids to BYU. These are also the parents who are shocked when their kids take their parents' non-conformity to the next level and wind up living a, shall we say, more "secular" lifestyle.

The hawaiian version is a new one for me but doesn't really surprise me. If you take a hard look at what you really want for your child, I think BYU is an absolute no-brainer. That said it's not difficult to rationalize just about anything you want to these days.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard this ...

I'm not saying BYU doesn't have some narrow-minded alumni out there. But when people say that 'only someone from BYU would ...' they lose absolutely 100% of their credibility with me. BYU grads are a hot commodity in the world of graduate-level education and it's not because of their narrow-mindedness.

I usually hear stuff like this from:

a) people who applied to BYU and were not admitted (are now bitter)

b) people who have never been to Provo but "know all about the bubble"

c) people who watch too many of those terrible mormon movies

d) pure, loud-mouthed ignorance with no desire to understand, just hate.

I'm actually in the MBA program and I can (bear my testimony?) verify that this is a top 25 program and getting better. Most of these students here have international experiences and speak multiple languages (not just RM's) We have world-class instructors from all the major universities across the country and they bring in really smart folks and kick our butts. And if you remember last years disastrous job market? Every student who wanted an internship last year managed to get one. That's virtually unprecedented.

And it's definitely true we toot our own horn here in the Tanner, but that's called job searching and recruiting. I can't speak for the other programs at the Y, but I can vouch for this one. It rocks.

Also, the whole don't got to a school until it has 'multiple championships' is a terrible argument. Past Performance is never indicative of future success. If it were, there would only be one national champion every year and there'd be no reason to play the game,

and last I remember, USC didn't even with the Pac-0 last year.

I hope we schedule USC in two years and Kaveinga can play the game of his life. 4 sacks, 2 hurries, 3 fumbles, one recovery and an interception. Hardware in the cupboard doesn't win you ANY games.

I have come up with a theory regarding Ute fans.... If they have some sort of connection to Utah ( graduated from there, parents went there, etc ) they can be normal upstanding citizens and still be Ute fans. If they have no connection and still like Utah over BYU then 95% of the time they have something against the church and that is their only reasoning. Its sad but true.
L
Lawboy
First off, this is one person's opinion, so I wouldn't use it to paint a picture with. One person typically does not represent the whole in any way, shape or form.

Second, I would be curious to find out who this person is, what their personal biases are, if any. Did they have a son play at BYU or Utah? Using USC as the school to go to is pretty weak, as USC rarely takes kids from Kahuku, far less frequent than BYU does. Yeah, it can be a pipe dream, and USC has had some successful Poly players to look up to recently. But really, saying USC has a kid's back when USC probably has not even offered is silliness to be ignored. Per Scout, only BYU, Utah and Hawaii are on the radar at this point. And I guarantee Lane Kiffen is not going to recruit Hawaii as much as Petey did.

Third, her opinion is about to get shoved up her pie hole this year when a few Kuhuku and islander kids will play for us. J'Ray will play. So will Travis Uale. So will Hafoka. Malosi Te'o may see the field. Just because a couple bailed on BYU, and one who would have started this year got tossed for HC violations does not mean BYU treats those kids poorly. Just means that they worked hard to earn their spots.

Part of me agrees with you. One of the most frustratingly stupid things I've heard from my friends who consciously chose to attend schools other than BYU is that they could "never feel comfortable signing the honor code." Seriously? I could understand that coming from someone outside the faith, and I could understand that coming from a less active or faithful member, but I've often heard this even from good LDS kids, RMs and future temple marry-ers(?). Are you really that hesitant to sign a document that says, "I promise to the university that I'll do all the stuff that I'm already expected by covenant to God to do, plus some nonsense regarding my facial hair?" (Granted, some of my friends who said they could never sign the honor code have gone on to demonstrate exactly WHY they could never sign the honor code.)

On the other hand, I don't think it's fair to criticize LDS kids (or their parents) should they choose to go somewhere other than BYU (for reasons other than not getting in ;) ). I'm not sure BYU is the right fit for everybody. I know a good deal of members outside of Utah that really thrive on not being in the majority, saying it gives them more opportunities to favorably represent the church, and more "pressure" to live righteously. Plus, I'm sorry, but if I had been accepted to MIT (I guess this would be an alternate universe version of me that somehow excelled in math and science, my two worst subjects), I think it would be a tough call. Yeah, it's scary going off into a big secular university and not being surrounded by like-minded peopled, but I would think that in its own way, that could prove to be an uplifting and fulfilling experience.

Maybe you're just trying to say "LDS parents shouldn't actively campaign against BYU," and I would agree in most instances. I've just been bothered by some parents I've come into contact with who've had such "BYU or nothing" attitudes that they make strange judgments when their kids DON'T get into BYU.

In closing, no, I don't have anything relevant to say about Kahuku. Sorry ;)

I've driven by the high school a couple times the last few days (on vacation)... is that relevant? ;)

Kinda interesting to me that THE power be-all-end-all high school for football here in Hawaii isn't some big 'ol Christian prep school in the middle of Honolulu, it's actually in this quiet little town about as far as you can be from the "big city" (granted, not that far on an island as small as Oahu), and the school itself is small enough it's even connected to the Middleschool. I love it.

Bingo!!!!! Pete Carroll sure had Mark Sanchez's back when he decided to enter the NFL draft didn't he! Remember how Pete publicly blasted Sanchez?? He blasted the kid. Sanchez did pretty well las year didn't he? Yep!! Who was Pete looking our for??? Purely himself! Just like he dumped USC & took care of himself w/ a fat NFL paycheck (not that he asn't already well paid @ USC). Can you say hypocrite!!! Oh yeah. And now - w/ Kiffin running the program. There's a pillar of judgement & integrity - cough - cough - gag!!!!

Bronco is da man!!!

You even see the same thing with BYU fans. There's always the "I love my Cougars and yes I'm Mormon but I'm cooler than the rest of you because I drink beer!" fans on every BYU board, for example. Lame.

Agreed. If I had been accepted at MIT it would have been a tough call for sure. My beef is with the members of the church who think that it's not a tough call, that is, they think BYU has nothing to offer a person who has been accepted to MIT, that the decision should be automatic, and that it's a "shame" that so-and-so went to BYU instead.

BTW, DL Simote Vea, a returned missionary who transferred to BYU from BYU-Hawaii junior college, is also from Kahuku, along with Jray Galea'i, Spencer Hafoka, and Malosi Te'o. Travis Uale, Kalama Kaluhiokalani, and Aveni Leung-Wai are also from Hawaii, but different schools.
