For those of you who still suggest that Bronco and/or Anae has said in the past that they won't "change the offense" to suit the strengths of their various QBs, here's a quote direct from the head man himself:

Mendenhall said when Nelson is taking the snaps, "what we try to do is basically design the offense to highlight his running skills, then to be able to make the deliverable throws that come off the running game."

The coach compared the skills of Heaps and Lark to former BYU quarterback John Beck, adding that Nelson is "more similar to" last year's quarterback, Max Hall.

"The core offense will be the same either way," Mendenhall explained. "It will just tilt a little bit based on who's in there."

So while wholesale changes won't be instituted, you can expect the offense to be tailored to whoever winds up starting. What's more I think we can read into this that they like both of their "leaders" right now and will find ways to get them each on the field to utilize each of their unique strengths. This is extremely good news to me as I think it will make our offense just that much harder to game plan for and stop.

That is something I had not really considered. Remember the Leak/Tebow combo offense did pretty well in '06--well enough that I am wearing the National Championship Polo as we speak. Now, I am not saying that Nelson is the dominate rusher that Tebow was, but there may be a way to incorporate both into the offense. Since they are different styles, it isn't the same problem as the "when you have two QB's you have no QB's" problem since they each have their own special skill set to be used in certain situations. As long as they can deal with the rhythm changes the way Leak was able to, it could work.

All that being said, I think that is way too outside the box thinking for Bronco and Anae. They will pick one QB and go with that style, and that is probably best.

I think Bronco is an out of the box type of coach more than we think. His first few years at BYU did not allow him to show it offensively since Anae was new at his job too, but it did defensively. It does not get more out of the box than that 3-3-5 Lobo defense he ran when he first got here. Bronco is not afraid of innovation and to try new stuff, and then change when it does not work for you, as evidenced by the switch to a 3-4 scheme, which has been awesome for BYU, btw. I could totally see BYU using both Heaps and Nelson next year, depending on situations to pressure a defense more. In fact, I hope they do and am on board with this 100% because the styles they bring are so different and would make BYU tougher to game plan for, as a result. I expect Haps to get more reps in game for sure, but Nelson will see the field. I think it works great for us early in 2010, too.

Just wondering, if they would consider the wildcat with Harvey. I saw they used it with Collie a few years ago seemed to work pretty well.

Dang Stats, it is true, if it's worth saying once, it's worth saying it again.
