Steven Thomas at safety

Anyone know who this kid is? Says he used to play corner, but has moved to safety and is playing with the 1's, and excelling. Also says Scott Johnson is mentoring him in the position. Good read.

Thomas has never been a very widely known or discussed recruit. He was only a two star recruit. But even back during his recruitment I felt like he was going to be a player for us. In high school, he was just a jack-of-all trades that played all over the field on both sides of the ball. He seemed to be a real ball hawk too.



To date, he hasn't seen a lot of time but he has on occasion seen the field when others have gone down with injury and has been a special teamer. I think the fact that most don't know his name is a good thing (kinda like an OL) in that he hasn't gotten burned. Prior to this spring, I thought he could be a solid option for filling in the open free safety spot or at least land in the two-deep. It appears he has a similar work ethic and attitude as Scotty Johnson but he has better measurables. Oh and Scotty was a redshirt junior when he finally got his break too.

He has a mental head start over all the other recruits with Johnson's help. I have to imagine that Bronco directed Scott who would be the best player to mentor.

I've heard a lot of good things about Travis Uale; so it sounds like our safety position in is good shape which makes our corner position even stronger (bradley can stay at corner and eason buckner nicholson can back up he and logan) gotta love the depth. I understand that Nicholson will be back with us in the fall... I could be wrong.

There's no question the DBs are going to be the strength of the defense this year. When was the last time you ever remember that being the case?



With Logan, manning the field spot, Bradley at boundary, Rich at SS, that only leaves only one "inexperienced" player at free. I like Steven Thomas to be that guy. He doesn't have to be a world beater either, he just has to be fundamentally sound and let the other guys make plays.



Depth in the secondary is good too. Robbie Buckner behind Logan and Jray Galea'i behind Rich with either Aguirre or Eason behind Bradley (the other ought to be redshirted).

Uale is a former Ute (Freshman season). After his mission, he turned down a schollie to return to Utah to walk on at BYU. He is from a great family. HIs father is the Stake President of East Oahu Stake. I hope Travis gets his shot and makes Hawaii proud and the Utes sorry they lost him. Being a former Ute - he must have speed and athleticism.

In another context, a different word was used. The different word was "repentant." Those to whom it was applied were General Authorities of the LDS Church. The group from which they had come was lawyers.



If "repentant" is a stronger word than "reformed," does that mean lawyers are worse, as a group, than Utes?



Another question, do REFORMED Utes retain their speed and athleticism, or does reformation remove those characteristics? This question reflects, in part, the "star" phenomenon. You know, the one where a four star recruit becomes a three star recruit, or even two star recruit, when he commits to BYU.
