Slot position WR--McKay trying it out

Sounds as if BYU is trying McKay Jacobsen in the slot position that Andrew George manned last year. McKay played the slot in high school and could be a BEAST in that role with his speed. I think Drew Phillips could play there as well when he shows up. JJ DiLuigi is trying the slot as well. I like this change. With the big bodies we have outside, McKay is a great fit inside.

It's about time he found his way there. I think it a great fit for McKay. Here's hoping they stick with it.

I like this move. I can only imagine that Collie's success makes McKay even more motivated to make the move stick. This can only be beneficial for everyone involved.

McKay would be a perfect slot but I hope we still use his speed on the outside occasionally to stretch defenses out. I suppose you could also stretch them from the inside but by having him run an outside route it forces the safties to have to cheat to the outside a bit to defend against his speed and really can open up the middle quite a bit.

JD Falsev is going to be another intriguing option for the slot. He's really impressing so far this spring. But Covey is no longer in the mix and in fact done with football altogether due to back problems. I wouldn't be surprised to see Falsev get the vacated scholie with how much it sounds like he'll be utilized this year.

I honestly believe J.J. DiLuigi would be a perfect fit for the slot along the lines of McKay. I like our depth at running back and I believe DiLuigi is a talented athlete that could be put into better use somewhere else.



This article touches basis with our WR's. Doesn't get into details, but mentions our WR's are all returning and will be more experience. It also states that our offense isn't changing cause of all the talent that's returning, so I am curious to see how the slot position pans out.

Our WR's will have to take more of a load until our TE's get their feet wet, cause we seriously have relied on our TE's for many years now. Pitta/George stepped up and I don't doubt we'll have another do the same.

For the last couple years we have played big TEs in the slot, which we will still be able to do when the new TEs come along, but being able to use a small quick WR in the slot is a real threat as well.



The fact of the matter is that if McKay goes pro it would likely be in the slot position so it serves him better to play there, and we have serviceable receivers to play outside. We have been able to crank out TEs, now maybe we can start cranking out slot receivers.

BYU could turn into a real "slot" producer. Austin Collie was the first, McKay Jacobson could be next followed by a guy like Hafoka or Phillips.

I'm betting Jacobson will no longer be the fastest player on the team next year, so the slot may be perfect for him, and for the team. If Apo proves himself at the WR spot, Jacobson in the slot...it gives us some real speed at two spots. And it looks like we have some great talent, size, and speed in the new, young wide receivers. Heaps is smiling.

Recall that Jacobson was fresh off a mission last year and was dealing with hammy issues all year. He'll be significantly faster this year; at least as fast as he was his freshman year when he was timed in the high 4.3s low 4.4s. Apo is in the high 4.4s as I recall but that was after he dropped from 4.7 with some special training. Clearly he's got the body type to be even faster. And Phillips is running in the high 4.3s right now. Those are the three guys who will probably be competing for the team's fastest man honor over the next two years.
