I noticed that he's had at least two sacks this spring so far and was wondering if anyone had some analysis on him. He sounds like he could be a great speed rusher at DE. Has anyone seen this kid play either in HS or at spring practice?

I just know that Bronco took a risk on this kid. He is from Layton High School and played well for them, but was not highly recruited. Indications were that he was a great high school player though with some good speed. He played TE and WR in high school, so the move to DE was a good one, with his great size and speed. If he bulks up some, he could be a beast. I think the TCU approach to recruiting helped us here. If it works out, all credit to the coaches.

He was definitely an under the radar guy but he still had a collection of offers including Stanford before BYU became aware of him. But it's tough for anyone, the scouts or coaches, to know about these kids when they don't do the camp and combine circuits.

As I recall, I think he lead the state in sacks his senior year and a lot of fans over at TBS were/are very excited about his prospects. He could be a good one and could even contribute as early as this year with the openings at DE.

We never seem to get a very detailed report on how the defense is doing... ever, really. At best we get little comment about a pick or a sack that someone got. But even though we haven't heard a great deal about the D this spring, I'm really expecting a pleasant surprise this fall. I think these guys are going to fierce and good. The mix of experience and talent that we have to replace the departed has me giddy about the new heights we could potentially reach in the coming years.

And I think that Bryson may be the next Ian Dulan for us. Kinda come out of nowhere and if not start, certainly contribute heavily on the DL.

Wow! This Bryson kid is 6' 5", 230 lbs. & fast. He was also offered a "scholie" by Stanford. I've been watching Stanford for a bout 3 yrs. now. They are really upping their quality of player. If Stanford offered him - he's something special - besides being smart. I have high hopes for Bryson!!! Pure terror!!! Oh yeah.

From the last picture I saw of Bryson on byucougars.com it looks like he's gotten bigger and obviously his speed his wreaking havoc. I'm excited for this kid.

Looks like as of today, he is the starter at Left End. At last, if he keeps his position on the depth chart.

With Putnam, the normal starter, being held out after a concussion.

True enough. I still think Bryson gets a lot of playing time this year. Sounds like he will plat Left End behind Putnam, with So'oto moving to the right end position Jorgensen had the past 3 years. I expect to see Bryson playing a lot on passing downs, Putnam more on running downs.

From the reports I expect just the opposite. Putnam hasn't played a great deal this spring and his strength has never been running downs. But Bryson has been doing pretty well this spring at both according to spring practice reports. I think we might end up seeing Putnam behind Bryson coming for passing downs. Vic will probably come out very little this year.

It's a shame when guys go down with injury and don't have a great chance to compete at the time when their positions is finally "open to bidders". With Jan and Brett gone now, the door was finally open for Putnam... with Dennis and Andrew gone, the door was finally open for Wilson... but both ended up injured or sidelined for much of the spring and now have seen guys (Bryson, Meuhlmann, Mahina) kind of become the penciled-in starters. Those jobs will still be open to competition but it will be nevertheless much harder to break in now that the others have established themselves a bit and have been getting solid reps and experience with the first teams.

I thought Bryson might pass rush since the kid already seems to have more sacks in Spring camp than that position had the whole season last year. That includes Putnam's downs. I love his speed for passing downs.

I would think it was the opposite. Putnam has freakishly long arms, and excels at batting down passes. He just eats up those vertical lanes as he approaches the opposing quarterback.

I think we might see a rotation between So'oto, Putnam, and Bryson. Putnam and Bryson may be the two best pass rushers we have although it may be hard to say since So'oto has probably been going up against Matt Reynolds.

Explain what you think the TCU approach is. Is it just picking the fastest athletes and then converting them to whatever their skill set or size fits?

Exactly what I meant. TCU seems to recruit a lot of running backs, then converts many to LB, or Safety. Even Jerry Hughes was recruited as a RB. Basically, get speed guys with some size, then fit them in where you need them. BYU has done much more of this the last few years. So'oto started as a TE. Jameson Frazier as a WR, Pendleton as a safety, Bryson was a TE recruit now on the D-line, Braden was a TE recruit now on the o-line. Etc. Obviously, you don't do this with everyone, but it definitely can help a team. And speed does matter.

The more we can coach and prepare like Gary Patterson, the better. What a remarkable coach.
