The QB Poll

I have no idea who will start as QB. I live too far away and not as invested in BYU sports as a righteous man and faithful priesthood bearer should be.


Coach Whittingham dies and goes to the Pearly Gates and is met by Mars there, St. Peter had the day off. Coach W asks Mars where he was going to live and Mars takes him to a nice little cottage with a beautiful garden, a white picket fence, and a gorgeous water fountain in the middle of the yard. Mars tells him that this is about the best it ever gets in Heaven. Coach looks around and all he can see are dwelling places similar to his, some a little better, but most of not as good. He is happy.



Some time latter, while Mars is doing whatever Mars does, Coach W comes roaring up, and he's cussing up a storm. Mars finally gets him to calm down and explain with his indoor voice what the problem is.



"Why, I just can't believe it. You lied to me. There I am, going out for a nice walk and I hear this music coming from over the hill. As I got closer, I realized that it was the Cougar Fight Song being sung over and over and over again. I thought that this was probably where Coach Bronco lived. So as I come over the hill, I find this beautiful mansion with BYU flags flying all over the place. The angels were singing the fight song and the '08 and '09 games between the U and the Y were being played over and over again on an outdoor screen. Coach Bronco's name was even in blazing lights over the football stadium in the back yard. I can't believe this. I live a good life and I get a little cottage and Bronco lives a good life and he gets a mansion with a outdoor theater and a huge 200,000 seat football stadium in a small corner of his backyard. What gives here?"



Mars said, "Oh, that isn't Bronco place, that's the Lord's place."


I hope that Heap gets it because it'll be awesome to have a four-year quarter back who will break all sorts of records and attract all sorts of awesome players to the team.

What about Andrew Pulsipher? Is this kid even getting a look in practice?

I voted for Heaps because thus far Nelson has not done much, if anything, to separate himself from Heaps. I fully believe BYU coaches would love to start Nelson which would allow them to RS Heaps. An RS will allow Heaps to further mature and develop physically while he learns over the next two years and runs the scout team. But I said months ago that if Riley wants to be the starter he has to be head and shoulders better. He has to give coaches a reason not to go with the younger kid with more upside. The longer there is no separation the more coaches will begin to lean towards Heaps. Just my opinion. I still would like Heaps to RS as I think it would be better both for his career and BYU's future.

I'm a fan of Heaps redshirting. So, that makes me a fan of either other QB that will win us games. I like Nelson's ability to run and don't know anything about Lark.

I think after the first five practices, we would all have to admitt that none of the three canidates have lived up to their billing; while they may have been able to lead a high school football team to a few victories, they will be overmatched at the college level. That is where Munns comes in. He has a nice personality and his name has a nice ring to it.

Bronco knows Munns will end up as the starter and that is why he said a starter will not be named until Fall. It is obvious he is waiting for Munns to make his grand entrance.

I was thinking the opposite of your opinion. But, then again... You must be a relative or friend with a comment like that.

I believe he's headed out on a mission after this semester. From what I understand, he greyshirted in the fall but was a full-time student and walk-on during the winter so he should still have five to play four when he returns from his mission.

I voted Heaps just because it seems apparent, at least to this point though there is still a lot of football to be played, that he is separating himself from the others. But there's a nagging in my gut that would love to see each guy get his chance and time. And that would almost have to necessitate Heaps redshirting and/or going on a mission (depending on his age, he could still leave before the season even started and not even burn a redshirt), then Riley could start or split time with Lark this year, maybe next too while Munns gets back into playing shape.



But the bottom line is whoever comes out on top next September is going to be more than adequately prepared to lead this team to victory this year. What happens after that remains to be seen. The starter could go down with an injury or could be pulled mid-season. Heck, they might, however unlikely, switch it up game to game. Then it could be a battle all over again next spring with the starter only having a slight advantage over the others. But as long as we have all four of these guys in the program, there's no question in my mind that whoever starts will give BYU the best chance of winning that day. As of now, that guy looks to be Heaps. But I'll back the coaches 100% in whatever decision they make.

It does look like heaps is the real deal. I remember last year following practices that hall was the only qb that could really move the offense for scores in practice.



heaps is doing it against the first team defense already after just one week playing at the college level.



I am beginning to be convinced that he may be our best fit. still very early but after going through all the camps and games and crap that these high level qbs go through nowadays i think heaps is not seeing anythign in byu practice that he has not already seen in many aspects.



i would guess a lot of the guys on defense on that army game were more athletic than many of our guys on defense despite still being in high school.



he is looking very good. it would be nice to be able to redshirt him but if nelson or lark can't outshine him the coaches may not have a choice but to play him come fall if he just keeps getting better than those guys.

It appears that he is the guy and he has the tools. However in college he will see defenses that he has not seen, even in the Army game. There are a lot of blitz packages and cover defenses that he has never seen. The question is can he pick out the coverages and wrinkles fast enough. There is still a learning curve that he will need to go through. It is not just pitch and catch in D1. I am certain that the D is playing a plain vanila D at this stage.

Normally I am all for redshirting the freshman. But in the case of Heaps, Stout, Q, and other guys who enrolled in January or just got back from missions, the rules are different. These guys get all spring and summer to work with the team. That is a huge advantage over a kid who strolls in come June. I think after those 8 months of seeing the offense or defense, running the scheme and working with the other guys, they are basically like a redshirt freshman.



I expect Heaps to win the job. He is more game ready than Lark since heaps was just playing the last 4 years, while Lark sat the last two, and he just seems a better fit at this point than Nelson. I do think Nelson might get some spot duty as a change of pace, though. Easier to use Nelson in that rile with a true frosh QB than with a 5th year Sr at the helm.

You're not going to redshirt the best QB in camp simply because that's what normally happens at BYU,and given all the other mitigating factors you remind us of makes it all the more likely that he is the starter, barring some injury.I think,in the end, that the choice for Heaps will be a very easy one for the coaches to make.Nelson did not look like a BYU style/ability QB to me when i saw him in action last fall,and I've heard nothing this year to dissuade me from that opinion.I think he'll make a fine back-up.

We're about 1/2 way through spring ball and it does appear that Heaps is making the case more effectively than Nelson or Lark about being the best QB in camp. His performance on Monday or Tuesday (7-7, 83 yds and a TD) against the #1 Defense is something John Beck and Max Hall were doing in camps. And they weren't even doing that in their first camp. Nelson and Lark may have shown flashes thus far in camp, but they've been very few and far between and none have been as bright as that flash by Heaps - if indeed it was just a flash.



I would love there to be some kind of spring game/open practice. I really want to see Heaps throw the ball live. I've seen the highlights and saw him get better from his SO to SR years. I saw him in the Army All-American Game. I've been impressed each time. I want to see him in person now.



I still maintain that coaches would love to be able to redshirt Heaps. But I also think they're willing to go with him if they don't think Nelson or Lark would win anymore games than Heaps would.
