Lose another lineman = No Spring Game??

"Freshman Famika Anae was hurt during a team scrimmage, and lay writhing in pain on the field for awhile before being taken away in a golf cart.

Mendenhall said it is a “possible ACL” injury, but that “it hasn’t been confirmed yet.”

"Monday, before Anae went down, they had only six because Matt Reynolds and Terence Brown were held out with shoulder soreness.

Anae’s injury almost certainly means there will be no spring game, because Mendenhall has said that game was contingent on the health of the offensive line -- which is obviously not good right now."



Darn. I was looking forward to the spring "scrimmage" (let's not call it a game anymore) this year.

Anyone out there with any eligibility left that's been sitting around watching basketball this week and has the necessary girth (250 lbs) to play some O-line? I'm thinking they wouldn't turn too many people away. I'm only 130 so I don't think I could be a Justin Robinson stand-in, let alone line up opposite Vic So'oto.

I'm 6'5" 250, but I have the physique of Dr. Suess's Grinch. Will that work?

Lark: 4-6, 46 yards



Heaps: 1-4, 20 yards



"Jake's doing a really nice job," Mendenhall said. "It's hard to remember sometimes hat he's a true freshman. ... For him to be performing the way he is, I've been very, very impressed. Not to say that both James and Riley aren't doing a good job -- to me, just the thought that it's a true freshman after five practices during the Spring and he has the poise and confidence and execution that he has so far is impressive."



Here's some positive news. Not much was said about Lark, but in an article in the DU Lark sounds like he's got some serious promise. If Heaps wants to play like Detmer or Mcmahon that's fine too, I'll take either Lark or Heaps, but it's funny that they mention Riley as having successful handoffs. Riley will be wildcat for us next year. Munns will backup L or H.

There wasn't going to be a spring game anyway. But anyone else concerned that this is at least the third ACL surgery for Famika. I don't think we'll ever see him in Cougar blue.

From Jay Drew's interview with Bronco:

On whether he can say the spring game is officially off, due to the dearth of healthy offensive linemen:

“I don’t think so. We might do some kind of scoring, with 7-on-7 or something. I dunno. I am going to try to make it as appealing as possible so people want to come watch. But right now it is just too early to say.”

So while there won't be a spring "game" per se, at least there will probably be a chance for the fans to see the players in action.

Which would be more than last year and I actually think the fans would like this better anyways. The last thing fans want to see is some lineman (D or O) go down with an injury. A 7-on-7 scrimmage would give BYU fans what they want this year. Namely a chance to see Heaps and Nelson go head-to-head in throwing the ball.

The fans have moved on- Now they just want to see the Heaps/Quesada combo! ;)

I would be so shocked if we didn't have a spring game. Just shocked. 8)

Quite frankly I think Anae was a waste of a schollie. He's had a lot of health problems and he wasn't that good anyway. Even if he stayed healthy I don't think he would come close to sniffing the field. The kid just played way too soft and was weak for a lineman.

Spring game is a go, just more in practice form. And they are doing it for the fans:

"The team announced Monday that they will be holding a limited spring practice game which will be help on April 10. They will be holding a kid’s clinic at noon, which will be conducted by the players. That will be followed up by more of a practice than an actual game, as they’re still looking to manage their lack of depth along the offensive line.



“I love the fans to be part of our football program in some capacity," said Mendenhall. “The value of the game itself, I don’t think there is any value at least from a football perspective. In terms of appreciating the fans, there is some benefit.”



While some would argue that the spring game could go a long way in determining the starting quarterback, Mendenhall emphatically disagreed with that notion. He informed the media that the way they structure practice helps them do that as much as any spring game, and that one more practice wouldn’t do much in his mind to help make a final determination. He also indicated that the final decision likely won’t be made until the end of fall camp."
