Sounds like BYU has a shot here. question is, can the kid play? We need his size is all I know.

Sounds like the kid can play. He had some good games down the stretch. He had two double-doubles this year and a few more where he was close. He also had two or more blocks in 7 games. Not too shabby for a Sophomore in the Big 12.

Anybody know if he'd be eligible to play next season or would he have to sit out a year??

Will have to sit a year. It is a D-1 t oD-1 school transfer, so like the Kaveinga transfer, you have to sit.

His HS coach announced that the top 3 are Cal, Virginia and LSU. I thought he wanted to be closer to home?

What we need is a rebounder or defensive game changer next season. to help with the transition for Davies; Hamilton wouldn't be eligible next season The odds of finding a prep kid that can come in and immediately comtribute are low (there just aren't any stud big men on our radar) so the next thing is to scour the JUCO for a 4,5 that can give us good minutes. If we find a JUCO big this year and he pans out, we can afford to redshirt Harward and Austin their freshmen years at the Y, which would be huge.



Now, the 7'2" lds kid that transferred from arizona state and is due back this year would have been a nice get.



Since Hamilton, has to sit out a year, it probably doesn't make much sense for him to compete with Brandon Davies (3 left), Nate Austin (5 to play 4 after mission), Ian Harward (5 to play 4 after mission), James Anderson (2 left), and Chris Collinsworth (4 to play 3) (at least for him, for us it makes a ton of sense, especially if Davies decides on a mission) - given Hamiltons #s and minimal ability to run the court like a Davies or Hartsock, I don't think he projects as a starter for us in a year from now (when he becomes eligible to play for another D1 team) BUT if he uses the transfer year to get better, he'll be a nice role player for whoever gets him.



btw - Hamilton was not particularly highly regarded out of high school (though he was recruited by BYU) but has put up ok numbers (not great but he does board and block shots) at ISU as a soph ; particularly towards the end of the season when given minutes (in fact he actually beat KSU this year at KSU)



There's a good chance that Harward and even Austin could develop in the same mold in the future.

I'd cut Zylstra, Magnusson, and Anderson to land this kid -Justin Hamilton from Iowa State- and/or Stephen Rodgers from ASU. And if we managed to do so and land them both in that circumstance we'd still have two scholarships left over! !

Just out of curiosity, who is BYU looking at if not this kid?

I like Davies, but he's still a work in process and the drop after him was quite steep this year. isn't Center where we need the most help?

Keep in mind the issue here is that Hamilton can't play next season; otherwise this would be a no brainer. Dave Rose had no problem taking JT off the bench, he certainly would have no problem bringing Daviess of the bench if Hamilton could play next season... he can't so that's a moot point.



So then you have to decide what you're going to do with scholarships, (magnusson, zylstra, martineau) and redshirts when Austin and Harward get off their missions.



If you tell Justin Hamilton that he'll play starters minutes after next season and his senior year, you're looking at

a senior Noah Hartsock, a junior Brandon Davies, a junior Justin Hamilton, a senior James Anderson, a junior Chris Collinsworth and RM freshmen Nate Austin, Ian Harward, and Boswell (Boswell was a walkon but has potential) putting 7 scholarships into the 4,5 position. Throw in Stephen Rogers the juco kid, and now you have 8 4,5s in 2 years from now; leaving 5 scholarships for the 1,2,3.

That makes ZERO SENSE unless you drop someone currently on scholarship now; however if you can make it work then every season for the next 5 years our team will be NCAA tourney worthy considering the guards we have coming in.



I'd imagine it's weighing on Dave Rose how he can make this work and if it's worth taking a scholarship from a kid like James Anderson, Brock Zylstra, or Nick Martineau to improve this team.



I think if Rogers and Hamilton are willing, you drop someone and make it happen... I'm not sure if Coach Rose feels the same way.

That's the last we hear of this knucklehead, he's not athletic enough to survive the SEC. They might not play great hoops in the SEC but they play a brand that will eat Hamilton alive. That was a very poor decision. His numbers really aren't better than Hartsocks, so he didnt' really fit in at the Y unless we released a scholarship or redshirted both 7 footers on missions.



Rumor is that no one in the Pac 10 wanted to guarantee Hamilton the minutes he wanted. LSU is nowhere "close to home"



The guy we want/need is Stephen Rogers and we should know what his plans are in the next week. crossed fingers....

He's a 3 capable of playing the 4 in our zone defense. Our offense doesn't really use a "4" so he would fit very well in our offense. He'd really could be the final piece of the puzzle for a deep run in the dance.



We wouldn't have to lean on either of the Collinsworths; the pressure would be off them (1 mission rust 1 true freshmen) to just wreck havoc off the bench and we wouldn't miss Tyler Haws one bit while he's on his mission.



Rogers decision could hinge on whether or not he wants to play in an up tempo system like ours or a boring plodding offense like USU OR it could be all about wanting to start, and in that case Coach Rose has to decide if Abouo is the guy or he's just going to be a complementary bench player.



Regardless, we need the depth and length (6'8" 3 man is nice; like the Koch brothers at UNI) and if it means that Abouo comes off the bench and Rogers starts; then start Rogers for the good of the team and our chances in the NCAAs. If Rogers is willing to come in and compete for the job, even better,
