BYU to the Elite 8? Even the Final four? Really?

I've seen a couple of "goo-roos" picking BYU deep into the tourney.

Joe Lunardi answer: They'd better. I have the Cougars in the Elite Eight.



On CNNSI - Steward Mandel's final four picks: East: kentucky

South: Duke

Midwest: kansas

While I love to dream, and it's nice to see this kind of respect from these level and quality of sports analysts...I just don't see it. Maybe its the recently erratic play of Fredette and Tavernari (if he launches one more 28' shot with 20 seconds left on the shot clock, I'm going to strangle him), or if it was the weak performance against UNLV, or just history...I can't see BYU advancing even to the Sweet 16, let alone the Elite Eight or Final Four!



BYU should handle Florida and end that 17 year drought (can't believe the last time BYU won a tourney game, I was a sophomore in high school!) But I can't see them beating KSU. In fact, mark down a Kansas / KSU final four "rematch".

Gravy for sure. A win sets us up well for 2011 too. BYU can not be ignored next year with a win or 2 under the belt.



As for this year, if they get by Florida, that K State game will be brutal. K State has 7 total losses, but 3 are to Kansas. Of the other 4, only 1 is a bad loss(Iowa State), and the other 3 were to Ole Miss, Missouri and Ok State. All 3 are solid teams. Plus, they plowed UNLV by 15 at the Thomas & Mack. They are a very solid and athletic team.

I was just watching ESPN. They talked about BYU having the ability to beat Florida and Kansas State and then play Syracuse in Salt Lake.



Personally, I feel like we will be challenged to get by Florida. I think if everyone plays well we could get farther but we will need everybody, just not Jimmer.

On SportsCenter just now, Doug Gotlieb has BYU playing Syracuse in the Elite 8 in SLC. He said a win against K-State would depend on how well Jimmer is shooting.



I must admit, the Florida game scares me more than K-State. We HAVE to get that monkey off our back. We've all seen what this team can do when they get rolling, especially Jimmer. The early start time has not been our friend in past years and i dont expect it to be this year. If we can get our confidence up and make some big shots and big stops against Florida, I think we have a good game against K-State.



As much as I hate Syracuse, they are one of the best road teams in the country and I don't think we get past them, even with "homecourt" advantage.

Initial Thoughts - This is really ****** dull. There are no stud players in this entire region. When the best player is on 7 seed BYU, that is weak. I can tell you one thing, Pitt makes the second weekend every year. I don't even need to see who they are playing, I know they are going to win the first two games.

Upset Alert - UTEP over Butler. Book it, this one is happening. Butler is way past due for a loss and Derrick Caracter will eat the Bulldogs alive in the post. UTEP is ranked #25 but somehow ended up a 12 seed. That makes no sense.

Top 4 seed who won't make it to the second weekend - Kansas State. Consider me a non-believer in Frank Martin. He just looks like an idiot. And yes, that is two two seeds that I have losing early.

Dark Horse - Gonzaga. Keep in mind, Syracuse is banged up. The Zags are still a solid team. I probably won't pick them to win, but I would not be surprised if they send the Orange home early.

Going to the Final Four - BYU. Yep, I'm sold. This bracket is weak. And BYU has the hottest cheerleaders on the planet as I've told you many times. That's all I need to know. And I really like the name Jimmer Fredette.

I do think that this will be one of those weird years where we see some Cinderellas and thus I am picking the Mormons (BYU) and the Catholics (ND) to be in Indy on April 3rd.

No idea who this kid is, he ain't got class, but he's got style. The only reason I stumbled upon his blog is because it popped up when I googled "Who the HELL is going to win the South Bracket?" (btw, if anybody can answer that for me, I'd be obliged. I have NO clue).



Other highlights include calling the SDSU upset and the USU upset (along with giving Stew Morrill a shout-out, and mentioning what I can only assume is a prior post of his, in which he voted Stew ugliest coach in College Basketball. Meh, I could probably think of a few uglier (any Utah coach in the last 20 years, and no, that's not even including my rivalry bias).



Funny, if more than slightly crass, take on the tourney.

We do have to feel pretty good about our side of the bracket. The West is probably the easiest of the four and if we play to our potential, we could make it deep into the tourney.

Is it wrong that I actually thought his take on the tournament was pretty funny? I mean I don't see somebody like that taking the time to write all that, but I guess props to him. My favorite part is where he said he's sold on BYU to the final four because BYU cheerleaders are hot, and he really liked the name Jimmer Fredette. That's pretty funny though how you came across that.

Well, I'm no closer to figuring it out. I mean, Duke's good, but they're not Final Four good. I just don't know if there's somebody in the bracket who would beat them. I'm not even sold on Nova this year. The ironic thing is, that's the reason I googled what I did and came across the blog, and he said the same thing I was thinking!



On his glowing recommendation of our cheerleaders, however, I have to say, I thought it a little strange that the one brunette girl was there from BEFORE my mission ('98), and I was still seeing her on TV the year after I graduated ('06). Anyone else notice this? Seriously, is there a BYU Cheerleading Doctoral program I was unaware of??? (Haven't seen her at the games this year, however, so she must have gotten her PhD).

I have never picked against the Cougars in the first two rounds. Ever. I even spent a week wearing a Louisville sweatshirt to school in 1988 (horrible color, but totally worth it to represent for my team). After looking at this year's brackets, I am not about to pick against them this year.

Actually that game was played at the Orleans - No home court T&M. Be nice if the MWC tournament was played somewhere neutral as well. Besided, teams like UNLV lose games to no names and brand names early in the year and seem to pull it together later on in the season. It's hard to make a judgement about 2 teams that played back in December, there have been a lot of changes since then.

Yeah, I won't lie, that article WAS really funny. What was surprising though is how I agreed with like, everything he said for the most part. Besides just a few things, I almost felt like it was my own guesses and reasoning that I was reading.
