I Feel Like An Idiot Saying This

Because I rarely do it, I hate it when other teams (and our own fans) do it, and I haven't done it all season.

But I'm gonna do it.

These refs tonight have been as biased as they come. Not so much with the actual calls as they have been the no calls. Awful reffing. I'm not going to say we will lose b/c of it. But there's no way it's helping. Just awful. When one team can drive and get the call on minimal contact, and the other team can hack away and not have it called, it certainly makes a difference.

With that said, the defense has been weak - for awhile now. Just look at our last two games against TCU.

I am usually the same way but c'mon, this is ridiculous. It is a total screw job by these refs. Why come to the tournament at all? It only helps bubble teams. This is a joke. I hate it.

That makes me curious, does a team, "have" to play in a tournament? Because if not then why not start a boycott to get this thing off of UNLV's home court?

GENIUS! (If that's allowed that is).

I also recommend we threaten to withdraw from the conference and go independent unless they move the MWC Tournament. The conference would go downhill awfully fast. Do you really think the league is dumb enough to see what happens to the Conference without BYU?...oh...wait...they ARE dumb enough.... :sulk:

Exactly. Whenever I hear fans of teams start espousing referee conspiracy theories, I tend to think they're loopy. For that reason, I'll give the refs the benefit of the doubt and just assume that it was good ol' fashioned homecourt bias. I'm not making any accusations.

But if, somehow, word of foul play got out, I don't think I would feel much in the way of surprise. It seemed that bad.

What a screw-job by the refs. We were hacking them at the end to send them to the line, and they STILL shot one fewer FT than us. MWC homecooking at its worst.

What give it away the most were some of the late whistles.

Phantom fouls called on BYU (mostly Emery) weren't whistled as they occurred, but were whistled dead as soon as a BYU player recovered the loose ball. It's like they were waiting to see what happened.

I mean also in a way, does it or has it really benefitted our seeding to be in this tourney the last couple of years? I think we'd almost be better off without it... I mean call me crazy. I'm sure there has to be something that keeps a team from doing something like that though.

Forgive the off-topic rant, but can I just say that I HATE Conference Tourneys in general? I mean, if I have zero emotional investment in a team, then yeah, it's fun watching 3 out of the 4 top seeds in the Big East get shafted, or seeing the 8th, 11th, 15th, 18th, and 19th ranked teams upset on the same day, or watching the 7th ranked team win by one point on a 37-footer to a team with a losing record, or seeing the #2 team struggle to put away a team barely above .500. It's fun to see the underdog become a juggernaut under pressure and exhaustion. But all this really shows is how well a team will play when totally amped up to a much greater degree than the other opponent. (I guess this doesn't really apply, because BYU had every reason to be amped up tonight).

I know passion and energy are a part of the national tourney, so obviously it's important. But you start to wonder, while flipping channels and finding out that every ranked team is within 4 points of the conference #5, if these games really show who the better team is.

Or I'm just in denial. Blah.

I agree. The amount of upsets in the conference tournaments this year has been insane. What do these tourney's even accomplish? I've often questioned the purpose. Is it to allow sub-par teams to get tourney invites over more deserving teams - simply because they played out of their minds for a few games?

I did notice that and it did frustrate me. The ball would be knocked loose...and then the ball would go out of bounds...AND THEN did the whistle blow for a foul called... :gross:

This is now the #1 Worst Officiated Game I've Ever Seen. What was the previous number one? The Wake Forest game. No longer.

You know it's bad when Rose is fired up.

The WF game was just bad reffing in general. I remember being frustrated not only at the calls against BYU, but just the fact that the game couldn't go 5 seconds without the refs finding something to call. I was getting frustrated even when WE got the calls.

On the other hand, I could have stood to have heard a little more whistle tonight, if there had just been some that actually helped us.

Jimmer's arms are probably more red than they are white after how many times he got hacked tonight. That's what makes the clean steals that BYU got whistled for so painful - how badly Jimmer and others were getting hacked.

Wow, actually you know it's bad when even ESPN is willing to recognize that BYU got jipped! :gross: :gross: :gross:

"Willis hit two more free throws with 36 seconds remaining after a questionable foul on Fredette to make it 67-64."

I noticed this too... Jimmer seemed awfully red tonight. And after every play he was looking at something on his body. How many close games have we lost this year?

I've got to strongly disagree with you on this one. UNLV was playing MUCH more physical than BYU, especially whenever Jimmer tried to drive, and there were more calls on us, when there was not even a touch, than I can ever remember seeing.
C
CannonCougar85
Having watched that game twice now you cannot help but think that this was a total screw job. So many phantom calls on BYU and so many blatant no-calls in favor of UNLV. Down by 1 with 36 seconds left, Jimmer makes a steal and they are off to the races...but wait...the whistle blows...and it's a late whistle. BYU would have been up one but instead goes down by 3. That call changed the entire mentality of both teams for those last 36 seconds.

It makes me sick. Seriously, sick. Rarely have I been this upset with a game.

It's an utter and complete joke the way UNLV is allowed to play defense against BYU. I have no explanation for it. The level of contact necessary for a foul to be called on UNLV is simply abhorrent when compared to what is necessary for a whistle to be blown on BYU.

I am not saying BYU is not fouling. That the calls on BYU are not warranted. All I am saying is that the same standard is not being applied. I honestly would love to sit with that officiating crew (or ANY officiating crew that calls a BYU-UNLV game) and watch the game film. I would love for them to explain each call and each non-call. What were the seeing or weren't seeing that warranted all the calls on BYU's defensive end? And why was an equal or higher level of contact allowed to go uncalled on UNLV's defensive end?

I get that UNLV is a tough matchup for us. And I get that UNLV out plays us each time we play at the T&M. But I refuse to admit or even acknowledge that the game is called fairly and consistently. BYU simply does not get a fair shake from the officials when we play the Rebels. We simply do not.

It's joke. One that isn't funny.
B

I feel the same way Kitic, the reffing isn't bad, it's just lopsided which is worse than simply bad officiating. UNLV could touch, grab, bump, swipe or do whatever else they wanted to keep the ball in front of them. It would have taken 2-3 consistent calls for UNLV to back that crap off, but those calls never came.

It's funny that when BYU tries to play like that UNLV (or Xavier) has ended up in the bonus with 14 minutes to go in the second half in previous years. When Jimmer got the steal (foul) at the stripe on Willis it was basically the same thing that Willis (I think it was Willis) did to him which lead to Wallace picking up a steal and put UNLV at the line. That game was not called the same way on both sides of the court. Nearly every time JF drove someone could have been called for a foul. And the times that they DID give him the call, I felt like it was because Fredette had to do some acting, which is pathetic. Referees are turning basketball into Hollywood.

I also HATE complaining about officiating, but last nights game was close enough that ANY aspect of the game made a difference at the end.
