What's the Wonderlic test and it's purpose?




As I understand it, it is sort of an NFL IQ test. QB's are expected to score the highest on the test because of the demands of the position in the NFL.

The questions are easy, but I do think the time limit (50 questions in 12 minutes) poses a problem to some of the players. Math is my weak point, and 10 and 11 both required me to stop and calculate. I can see some guys who aren't too strong on standardized testing getting too caught up on questions like those when they'd be better off racking up the points on the easier questions.

Seeing a sampling of where the NFL greats fall, seems to me that the test is pretty much worthless, and not a good indicator at all of NFL success. The test needs to be based upon positional smarts, then let's talk.

To put those scores in perspective, the Post compared Wonderlic numbers of run-of-the-mill NFL quarterbacks such as Alex Smith (40) and Matt Leinart (35) to those of Pro Football Hall of Famers Dan Marino and Jim Kelly (both 15) and an established star such as Donovan McNabb (14) of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The funny part is saying that Tebow's terrible throws, horrible footwork, and bad decision-making "wowed" evaluators. By all accounts I read he bombed almost every aspect of the combine... :skeptic:

peyton manning scored 40+ also Jamarcus Russell sub 15 Vince Young scored a 6... there is some value to this test but it's obvious some prepare for it and some don't give a crap.



There is some correlation between the score and how fast they develop in the NFL; it's just that there is the occasional high score failure (Alex Smith) and low score success (Jim Kelly) ; the correllation isn't strong but it exists. You can't use the few anomalies to shoot down a test that's been given to tens of thousands of players. If it didn't matter, the multi-billion $ business that is the NFL wouldn't do it.



The fact that Saint Tebow was held up on a pedastal for years then bombs in everything NFL is comic gold.

The fact that he's Urbans guy = priceless (Urban has not developed one successful NFL qb)

The spread as run by Urban is not conducive to the NFL at all.



Tebow was an NFL bomb waiting to happen. If he is smart, he will switch to an H-back or something. But someone will take a chance on him just like they do with Vick. Freak athletes always get more looks.

Unlike Mormon RM's, for whom it's two and through,Tebow can always go back to being a Christian missionary. Not a bad way to spend your life if football doesn't work out.

If a good coach can get his hands on Tebow, he'll do fine. Tebow is a good football player and a good athlete, and the right person will know how to scheme to use him, just probably not at qb.
